Is the drive formatted as FAT32? Those discs are dual layer and need to be converted to WBFS file format for them to work on FAT32. You can use Wii Backup Manager to copy them to the drive and it will automatically split them into two files.

WBFS tends to corrupt existing games when you add new ones, you should switch to FAT32 if you want the option of GC games or NTFS if you don't care about that.
Anyway, try updating your cIOS, and try both IOS249 and 250 for booting the game. Make sure you have the recommended cIOS setup (249 base 56, 250 base 57, you can check with sysCheck). MP3 should work just fine with base 56.
Also try updating your USB loader.
If none of that helps it's probably a bad dump. I've had no problems with MP3, Metroid Prime Trilogy used to be tricky because of IOS reloading but isn't a problem anymore with latest USB loader and cIOS.

I'm positive MP3 isn't dual layer. MPT probably is, but he claimed MP3 doesn't work either, and he wouldn't even be able to copy a dual layer game if he didn't convert it to WBFS.

Delete the config files of your loader, get Wii Backup Manager, format the drive to FAT32, transfer the games, update your cIOSes (both cIOS X and Hermes), try booting using different IOSes and be sure to boot through Alternate DOLs when dealing with Metroid Prime Trilogy.

Oh, HBC can't load homebrew from NTFS drives. Doesn't make any difference where you load it from though.
What is the folder structure inside the wbfs folder? You need to have separate directories, each with a <gameid>.wbfs file inside them. Wii Backup Manager will do this for you.

u can have either one directory with all .wbfs or separate directories its all your preference

Just get the latest versions of the cIOS X and Hermes installers, the rest is just clicking "Yes" and "Next". You'll want to install cIOS 249, 250, 222 and 223 *if* your installations are out of date.

No, he is on WiiU.
Do not use Hermes installed, do not use cIOSX installers.

if you are on vWii, you need to install d2x v10 or v10alt for vWii only.
that's the only 2 compatible cIOS.

d2x cIOS installer for vWii.

If you followed the guide you linked, you should be fine.
you can try to re-follow it and re-install the same cIOS over, just in case the installation didn't completed correctly the first time.

Which USBLoader are you using?
the error should help you understand what's wrong
wbfs error not a Wii disc booting game please wait iOS 249 iOS reload blocked returned ret = -1
"wbfs error not a Wii disc". It means the ISO couldn't be recognized as a Wii game, it's probably a bad dump.
"booting game please wait" .. strange that it's still trying to boot the game if he said "not a wii disc" first.
"IOS reload block" is a cIOS d2x features, returning -1 often mean the function didn't complete correctly.

so, it could be :
your loader is old/not working on vWii.
your cIOS is not correctly installed, not the correct version.

This may not help but I can't play wbfs files installed via usb loader gx, it crashes.
However I can rip them with clean rip, convert them to wbfs and they play fine.
Might be a workaround that helps you as well:)

all of them?
users didn't report it, only 2 games have issues (and I don't know why yet).

Did you try to revert to old releases?
always try different setup to find the culprit, it could be the loader, your drive, your settings, your console, etc.
try a different loader, try a different loader's version, try a different USB/flash/HDD, try a different partition format, etc

finding why you have that issue with all games could help fix it.

I'm assuming that because I couldn't find anyone with the same issue that it can't be the loader and have to admit I like gx so much I didn't really want to use another loader if they did work, the fact they don't work when insalled directly from gx but do work after being converted from cleanRIP with wbfs manager is confusing leading me to assume I am overlooking some setting inside gx.

If it helps at all wii games ripped via gx won't convert to .iso format via wbfs manager either :-S. I did create a thread with this issue in so I will try some of your suggestions and post my findings there with a sys check once I'm back at the wiiU.

Thanks cyan

The settings shouldn't matter. the only setting you can edit related to dump is :
- split size (forced to 4GB if bigger size is selected on FAT32)
- Install folder : None (/wbfs/GameID.wbfs), ID_Title (/wbfs/GAMEID6_Title/GameID.wbfs), or Title [ID] (/wbfs/Title [GameID6]/GameID.wbfs)
- install partition : all, remove update, keep only game.

The default settings are:
4GB, Title [ID], keep only game partition.
I'll edit the partition setting to keep Game+Other for SSBB users complaining it doesn't dump correctly.

You said WBM can't convert back to ISO, so it's something to do with the data inside the .wbfs file.
Could you try to switch the partition or split size? (the path shouldn't affect the data)

I'm using default setting's so my dumps are into wbfs on fat32 as .wbfs which means they are smaller than 4gb is that right? Or is the intial size a factor.

Do you want me to try my hdd formatted to only ntfs maybe see how that works, would it be worth doing a sys check to see if I've missed something first. I don't want to waste your time cyan if I'm the only one with this issue is it not more likely my hdd compatibility?

I have an ntfs partition could I install onto that before I reformat, could it be anything to do with the titles, I'm not sure if you have seen my other post but gx also crashes when selecting grid view, I've found no other posts with this issue leading me to think the two are related.

the wbfs size is smaller than 4GB if the game's data is smaller too, so it's fine.
if the data on the disc is bigger than 4GB, it will split the wbfs file in two at 4GB.

If you have an NTFS partition, you could try. but the written data should be the same, whether you use FAT or NTFS.
if the data is wrong, it's probably the loader which is reading and/or writing the data incorrectly. (but I don't know why only for you)

Grid view, you mean the channel layout? or the Wall layout?
if it's the channel layout, do you have a custom theme installed on your console's system menu?
USBLoaderGX is loading ressources (pictures, colors, sound, font) from the current theme files.
maybe if you installed a theme, one of the file is not correctly created.
If you don't have a theme, can you go to banner layout if you don't have any game? (fresh install or no HDD connected, etc.)
