Okay,

I'll be as simple as I can. On 9.2 sysNAND, downloaded 9.7 home menu cia (because of the few extra features that it has), installed it via FBI and bricked my console.

Any idea why simply updating the home menu bricks it?

Restored my console so it's working still. Just wondering why I can't install this title...

What makes you think you can download the home menu update and make it run?

Because you also need all the other stuff, not just the menu. Is it TWL_FIRM? I dunno, but there's some internal things that you need as well. Otherwise the home menu will check for things that don't exist or are outdated.

I thought it would run because it was signed and I checked the update report log on yellows8's serer. I even installed the notification and DSP update but it still didn't work. I wanted to get the new home menu without updating the whole firmware. I skipped intalling the firm files because I wasn't sure what they were used for.

I didn't think the home menu would rely much on anything else (it's just a homescreen.... right?). Just wanted to know what else would have to be installed in order to get it working, without completely upgrading the console itself.

I see. So I'd have to update almost everything on the console, just to get the home menu working? Eh, more work than it's worth I guess.

i like your bravery, i also like to do crazy experiments with electronics, but the reason that didnt work is most likely because of dependencies in the 3ds. One item looks for another item.
E.g in windows you cant just install a start menu ripped from windows 10 and install it one windows 7 without proper porting because this menu will be looking for new .dll files that are not there.

same with 3ds, the new home menu is
1. most likely encrypted and
2. looking for new files that are not there

LMFAO

Instead of being a sarcastic ass, how about you stfu? Ever tried getting the Android 4.2 camera app to work on 4.0/4.1? OH SHIT! IT WORKED! So how about you stop being a dick? "Oh, it won't work because the OS is older", bla bla bla - how about you try these things yourself?

Calm down. To answer your question, 9.7 home menu depends on 9.6+ kernel. It doesn't boot because of that. This is pretty well documented if you did your research and anyone on #3dbrew would have told you it wouldn't work if you asked. Now, you have to use a hard mod to restore your old nand backup.

Ah. I was thinking about the kernel introduced in 9.6+. I assume it has something to do with the encryption? I guess the best I can get is 9.5?

9.5 home menu requires 9.5 kernel. Nothing to do with encryption. Like people said, you can't copy any file from Windows 7 to Windows XP and expect it to boot.

I guess. Aaww. That sucks. I know about the nature of Windows so I understand all that. I was hoping that it would be different for the 3DS (hey, sometimes people like to discover things for themselves even if it means bricking your console :P. Guess I know now).
