I have an american O3DS XL and LOADS of retail carts for it + a gateway

I bought a japanese N3DS because I liked the regular size better and thought it wouldn't be an issue since gateway classic mode is region free

Now I honestly can't believe I didn't think this through, but I'm having a problem

I can't play my retail cart games online because they require updates

What can I do to update the games that does not involve playing the game as .3dz or .CIA? (seeing as that would defeat the purpose of buying my games legally, I want to play using the carts themselves)

I know you can get updates as .CIA but those won't work in classic mode which is what I need to launch my games

also if emuNAND 9.6 were supported, would I be able to just get on the Jap eShop and download the update? or are the updates region locked

Eshop is region lock. So if you have a japanese system, it will take you to the japanese eshop and updates for those games.

Basically your out of luck.

Completely? :( What have other people been doing?

Would a region swap on just EmuNAND with eShop access be possible? Is it straightforward to do?

OR if there's some sort of homebrew that allows you launch carts in Gateway mode that would eliminate the problem

Region swap is possible, but it's probably easier to just install CIA updates for your games.
Gateway doesn't work with the latest FW yet anyway, so even if you region swapped you wouldn't be able to access the eShop. CIA updates are the only way on n3DS currently (on o3DS you can use rxTools)

CIA updates do not work with retail carts (because classic mode doesn't patch signature checks), so there's nothing you can do, short of playing them on your old 3DS only, or ripping them to .3DS/.3DZ files.

Use NTR2.2 to export your saves from the retail carts, install cia games in emunand and use savedatafiler to import saves into cia games.

This has piqued my interest, what's the difference between exporting a save using NTR 2.2 and the Gateway menu? Thanks for your help

I'm still deciding but I think I'm probably gonna go with a region swap, get the US eShop then wait till Gateway supports 9.6 emunand. This is because I still use my old 3DS to play my retail carts too so I don't wanna play them on my new 3DS sometime then go back to using the carts with my O3DS like all the progress with my N3DS never happened

Just a question about this process, do I need a donor US 3DS? Since I heard region swapping is done by replacing a file called SecureInfo_A with one of the desired region

I used this method to export my save from retail cart pokemon Y and inject it to cia pokemon Y, so that I can play the game in emunand with the same save I have in the retail cart. NTR is used to extract saves from retail carts and SDF is used to extract saves from cia games. Just replace the sdf saves with the ntr saves and use sdf to inject the replaced saves into the cia game. There's detailed instruction in the post https://gbatemp.net/threads/release...in-for-ntr-1-0-2-0.384865/page-8#post-5451562 I assume you would like to keep your old saves and play them in cia files. CIA games are region free and can be updated with updates that also come in cia format.

CIA updates should be legit, no? So they will work on classic mode.

OK so just to get this clear, classic mode is heavily advertised as breaking the region lock and yet its hardly ever mentioned that you pretty much can't play those games online? (since you can't get the updates)

this is such a bummer. I want to do a region swap on my Jap N3DS's emuNAND but I don't have cubic ninja nor Sky 3DS, both of which cost fortunes

also I need a donor SecureInfo_A file

You can't dump the carts and play them in Gateway mode, with the updates installed as CIAs?

you will need to load in other way :B
I didin't knew that instaling an update wont work on classic mode õ3o
but for me, in GW mode, to update smash bros (Us console, japanese game) I just did it ingame, not eshop, and it gave me the right update (last time, when the last system version where suported by emunand)
I just hope when I connect with a jap game, it don't tell nintendo that my game is japanese lololo

since you have the original game, you don't have much to worry about loading then in GW , it's not actually piracy if you bought the game (well having a GW and modding a console, even to playing original games are considered piracy by nintendo :v)

Other way you could change the emunand region like they told above

I can, but I want to use my physical carts as I sometimes put them in my US O3DS XL and play them there too

I'd have separate save files if I dumped them and played them on my N3DS as ROMs

Like a friend told me about my problen about getting the japanese smahs update:
It's the price you pay for not paying the price xDDDD

Well, region lock suck xp his is one of the things I most hate on nintendo

But yeah this brings me back to one of my earlier questions: is there any way to launch a retail cart in Gateway mode then? Some sort of homebrew launcher app or anything of the sort?

Would solve the problem

If you insist on using retail cart then there is no way to update it unless support for emunand 9.6 is out and the update is region free like pokemon. You may want to consider playing cia games instead and use the method I mentioned to keep your saves from the retail cart.
