First of all, hello, my first post here, hv been looking around and forum looks really great.

So, I recently bought a regular 3ds xl (which is on Firmware 8.x.x [cant remember exactly])

I Live on Brazil and game-things here are too much expensive, so was thinking about buy a Sky3ds blue chip to play new games, but i have some questions and would apreciate help.
By what i have read, some games(i heard about pokemon especifically) are requiring u to update system before playing online - is that true?

If yes, so i could still play these games online if i hv a sky3ds? (i hv the real games i want to play online, only want to use sky3ds for other games)

Is there anything i should be worried about?

And finally, does someone hv a link to a step-by-step on how to setup the sky3ds to play the downloaded rooms?

Sorry if i'm doing this thread worng by any means and fell free to correct me, i'm really new to this forums.

You are on 8.x, so I recommend buying a Gateway instead. You can do much more with it.
Not to mention I constantly see threads here about Sky3DS carts being faulty in some way or another, not being able to cycle games, not being able to STOP cycling games, cart not showing up, button not working, button broken off inside of cart, games being unable to boot, the list goes on. For example, here's a recent one https://gbatemp.net/threads/sky3ds-auto-cycling.386837/

Gateway might require a bit more setup but it's much more reliable and you can use it to install cias, play out of region games, play eShop ROMs, run homebrew, and more.
Sky3DS will let you do none of those things.

You can download game updates in the CIA format online and install them if there is a game you want to play online. No game will ever require you to update the 3DS's firmware to access online features (except Eshop but you don't need it).

A lot of online games need a game update to play online, yeah. You can't access the eShop to download them without an updated system, but CIA files are available of all the current updates, so right now there's nothing you can't do without updating :)

You can download game updates in the CIA format online and install them if there is a game you want to play online. No game will ever require you to update the 3DS's firmware to access online features (except Eshop but you don't need it).
That's true for the time being, but if Nintendo release a new firmware that no emuNAND will work with (GW, rxTools or other) then people have no way of dumping CIA files. It's happened in the past although that was before rxTools existed.

I think i understood, so correct me if i'm worng, if any game has an update i can download it on my pc and then update it by myself on the 3ds?

And so, i can play my original games online without fear of been banned from the online system? (i have heard some stories about it on internet, but dont know if its true)

I'll be looking for some tutos on how to setup gateway, looks the better way now. but i will need help to install it, since i heard it can "break" the system if done wrong

Thanks bro!

  • Games like Pokemon require an update to the game to go online, which in turn requires a system update to access the eShop.
  • The above can be circumvented with a Gateway by installing the patches as a CIA, but the Sky has no such option.
  • You can still install the update and play online with the Sky.
  • Worry 1 - Nintendo may eventually patch the system firmware to block Sky.
  • Worry 2 - If you don't set a private header properly, your console may be banned from online play.
  • Worry 3 - Theoretically, you can be banned even if you follow the precautions from Worry 2.
  • Local multiplayer still works even if you're banned, for the record.
  • Tutorials can be found by searching. Try the keywords "Sky3DS tutorial" on GBATemp or Google, or other keywords depending on what topic you want more detail about.
If you want to use other means, your version should be vulnerable to exploits which allow other means.
This is talking about a purely Sky3DS scenario, but if you haven't updated past 9.2 you can look around for other ideas on how to proceed.
Note: If you want to attempt other means, do not update your system firmware. You will lose the ability to use anything but the Sky3DS itself.

So if i got it right, with the sky, Can i update the firmware (to play online with the original game-card) AND yet have the downloaded games working on the sky3ds?

This dont make it a "safer" choice?

Edit: sorry for alot of questions, but i'm really looking for the best possible choice

It's the simplest, but if you install other means you can run the current latest firmware in a separated copy of the system firmware (known as EmuNAND) and install updates from there. Depending on how you do it, you may even be able to install CIAs of updates and eShop content (albeit then you'd be on a less-than-latest version, but as stated that's not necessary for multiplayer).

The setup is longer, you're at the mercy of the community when updates happen but you don't have to be on the latest version in this setup, and Nintendo can't patch out your Sky.

The problem is, if you update your system normally, you lose access to even attempt any other way, so it's down to if you're willing to put in some looking around vs if you're willing to risk Nintendo patching the Sky.

If it sounds complex, that's because I can't put it into simple terms.

So, basically

If i have sky and update it normally by the console, my normal games will work and also the sky, but if nintendo happens to be able to block it, only my original game will work? (and gateway will never work)

On the other hand, if i choose the gateway, i'm depending on the comunnity to be able to play online when an updates comes? (cause i cant update)

Is that the real choice i should do when buying either a sky3ds or a gateway?

They both have their pros and cons.

Ask yourself this:

What do you want? Just to play games? Or to hack/fix/save/backup them?

Gateway 3ds = everything.
Sky3DS = just games.

Gateway makes a fake firmware which lets you use eShop and updates, etc. Problem is Gateway hasn't updated that fake firmware to 9.6 so you can't use it for now. It does everything. Makes ROM dumps of your games, backup the original firmware, runs tools and hacks, etc.

Sky3DS works on any firmware, but it ONLY plays .3ds ROMs (not rooms). No firmware backup, or dumping ROM games or using cheats. No eShop games, .CIA or .3DZ files. ONLY .3DS ROMS. Even if eShop game is in .3ds format it will not work. To install Gateway on a New3DSXL you will also need an actual Cubic Ninja game cartridge.

Sky3DS, however, can get you banned for playing online (internet play) if you don't fix the template file for the Sky3DS. To do so means you need special data to copy to file. To get data you need Powersaves Pro.

Theres a very large site that is not going away anytime soon that I can't mention here , there you can find any files for the 3ds you can possibly need with dedicated members in the "3DS scene" so you wont have to worry about finding stuff you need or want ever.

Not being a prick there called ROM's not rooms secondly if you don't have a private header (created from a game you own) you "might" be banned from online play

Cara, beleza?

Not trying to be a prick, but they're called "ROM's" not "rooms".

You're not a prick Xenon. Everyone's gotta learn... might as well teach them. ;)

gkoelho, I suggest going for the Gateway 3DS before you get stuck using the Sky3DS.
