Hardware If the Wii U + Pro Controller were sold together would it have gathered more positive feedback?

Than let's say, the GamePad?

The name "Wii U" makes people think to this day that it's solely an add-on to the Wii and the GamePad which looks a lot like a tablet also has folks thinking they can play game cards on it as if it were a 3DS. So Nintendo definitely shot themselves by how they marketed the damn thing.

However, if the Wii U had been bundled only with the Wii U Pro Controller (Wii U's traditional controller) then perhaps the situation would have been a lot different for the better because had they kept it traditional a la PlayStation/Xbox there wouldn't be any confusion what the console's purpose would have been for.

It's just too little too late for Nintendo to do anything about the Wii U and just release a few games every now and then as they're doing. There's no way around it the Wii U's an utter commercial flop.
P.S.: There were bundles that included the Wii U Pro Controller as a bonus but not as the main controller because the GamePad has games locked (or so that they only work with it even though most of them don't really need a big ass controller like the GamePad to work) to it as well as the System Settings for some reason.

Yes the gamepad as a gimmic has been proven to be a mistake. It makes the console way more expensive than it otherwise would be and while it may have some neat features they have failed to excite consumers.

Being too expensive I believe is the number one thing that has made the Wii U struggle as much as it has. The Wii sold well as the budget console of it's generation and the Wii U has not filled that role.

I honestly don't think it would have made much of a difference. Do you really think that the wii u would have been that more successful if it had even less reason to exist than it already does??

Would the world be set alight by a new console, outdated before it is even released, very basic online infrastructure, nothing to promote the console as 'next gen'? No it would not be a success.

Would we be seeing gta 5, cod AW and the rest of them on the wii u, had the wii u come as a xbox 360/ps3 clone, 7 years too late?

No. It would be just as big a failure as it is now.

I'm not a gamepad supporter as I think it is absolute garbage (has anyone actually ever used the IR or camera on the GP??)

The wii u was and is a failure in its entirety, not just one specific part.

Not sure how the Wii was considered a budget sytem. I don't remeber the final bill but to outfit it for a family of 4 was not cheap.

3 extra wiimotes, 3 nunchucks, 4 motion plus dongles, 8 silicone mote skins. (Young boys at the time). 4 wheels and balance board. Then some games.

Fortunately I found gbatemp soon after and repurposed a external HD. :)

WII U hasn't been cheap either. 3 pro controllers plus Mayflash and 3 GC controllers for smash. I am sure to run out of memory at some point and need a external HD as well.

But to Wiicube's question. I'm not sure. I remember reading about it before release and being really concerned about how much the system would cost if I had to buy 3 extra Gamepads as I knew they would be more than a wiimote. :) Never could find and answer and that turned me off. I think the whole idea of one user having a different controller than the other players is just hard for some to grasp. Is he getting a competitive advantage?

I haven't used the Gamepad for play much at all but my 9 year uses it exclusively, except for Smash.

When you factor in all of the above plus the premium price for games I think Nintendo is anything but a budget system. The other two are.

Hm, you've got a point.

It's either way a commercial failure and there's no way around it.

Although I like the Wii U gamepad quite a bit with its remote features like off screen gameplay and a headphone jack, I do think it's one of the biggest reasons for the Wii Us failure aside from its god awful name. It's just far, far too expensive for a regular game controller and dumbs down the rest of the package as they probably reduced the Wii Us power to accommodate for the price of the controller.

They were sold together in Japan in the Monster Hunter 3G HD Ver. bundle.
Still the best bundle out there.
I thought this bundle would be the Wii U + Pro Controller with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate but it's like the others; With the GamePad too. Figures as the GamePad is pretty much sold only with every Wii U and not separately.

There's various bundles that include the Wii U Pro Controller in EU/US but sadly it's only meant as an alternate controller than the traditional (which is what it is).

Pro controller or not, it seems that that people now a days cannot look for information themselves. They need the tv to tell them everyhting. That's why the WiiU is considered a flop.

Gamepad is a gimmic that other companies imitates poorly.
3D is a gimmic, but many companies is working on that.

Nintendo has a terrible marketing team so whether it's on TV, Retail or Internet the adverts are either non-existent or very little and what's wrong with people expecting to see it on TV? It's how PlayStation and Xbox advertise to gain new consumers.

The Wii U's a flop because of Nintendo, lack of customer interest and lack of third party support (they've got Bandai Namco, Platinum Games and that's it but these two companies don't release games too often or that they'd be good).

They don't need to. They have tablets to do exactly that which are far better than outdated piece of shit GamePad.

3D is a gimmic, but many companies is working on that.

Others are working on proper 3D devices while N's attempts are it have been mediocre to below average (Virtual Boy & 3DS).

The only thing that Sony and Microsoft did for advertisment is revealing internal spec because kids love specsheet. More RAM and such = bigger penis for most of them.

The gamepad was designed for that. Your tablet, phones and Vita have huge lag.

Nintendo as always been the first to inovate and the others just follow.

Nintendo should make a system that plays bluray too, 4k Netflix, multi functions like the ps3 was.... They could sell like the ps4 and xbone but focusing on exclusive games, advertising them, they could have all the 3rd party games plus the exclusives.
They should advertise how powerful it is, maybe it could be even more powerful like the GC was. And they could remember customers that it also has compatibility with motion games for those who like Wii sports and so.

Funny you mention multi function capabilities of xbone and ps4, because neither one of them have any media support besides mp3 (welcome back to 1998) and like the wii u suffer from the nogaems disease. Well the ps4 has the new disgaea game, but that's it lol

I like the Gamepad. I don't want to be forced to buy a Pro controller. Without the game pad games like NintendoLand and WarioWare would not be possible. Those are fun games that you can actually get people to play with you. No one wants to play Smash. If someone came over my house and actually wanted to play, I wouldn't even want to play with them. They'd likely be a lot better at it than me. I'm not good at smash. I play it once in awhile, but I don't want to invest the time to learn how to play properly. Last night, I specifically turned on the Wii U just for netflix, even though I have Netflix app directly on my TV. Why? I wanted to smoked some tobacco, out on the balcony of course. I can't see the TV so well from my balcony. Using the Wii U, I could watch my Netflix from outside, and then when done with my tobacco, seamlessly switch it back to the living room TV.

Please don't forget about the value of off-TV play. What happens when your roommate is taking a turn on the TV? If that happens, I can still play most Wii U games if I feel like it.

I would argue that there is very little value in off tv play due to the low quality of the touch screen itself. The poor image quality and resistant touch screen detracts from the experience. I don't look at the screen because it is terrible to look at. I don't interact with the screen (or as little as possible) because it is terrible to interact with. I sold pikmin 3 because I couldn't stand having to use the touch screen so regularly with the map. It ruined the game for me.

As much as people like to pay out Apple with their ideas and opinions, they were 100% right when they said that making a product beautiful and easy to use makes people want to use it more. The same can not be said about the gamepad.

Xbox One of all gaming consoles can play MKV video files which wasn't possible because because they were restricted to AVI and MP4 files only.

This. The GamePad's a mediocre piece of technology and extremely outdated by today's standards.

I don't think it's fair to compare the console tech to smartphone tech.

Smartphones cost over $600 and are in a fast paced technological arms race.
