So my 3DSXL is stuck on 9.5.0-22U with no hope of ever getting GW installed. So my options seem to be getting an N3DSXL, use the Sky3DS exploit to backup sysNAND. Transfer my old 3DSXL files to N3DSXL and install Gateway, or must I first install Gateway THEN transfer?

Once I get N3DSXL setup, I can rip ROMs and header IDs to use on Sky3DS for the old 3DSXL and wallah...

Two 3DSXLs I can now share games on using Sky3DS.

Did I get that right?

Or will transferring old to new brick/reset the old? Or will they both be under same Nintendo account? Not sure about this...

But I -CAN- transfer downloaded games and savedata and profile data, etc. without upgrading the N3DSXL's firmware, correct?

If not explain how I would go about doing this... I'd like to know.

use the Sky3DS exploit to backup sysNAND.

What ? Sky3DS can't back-up your sysNAND, Gateway can, but not on 9.5.

You must first install gateway (which can only run on N3DS 9.2 or lower), using your Sky3DS to launch Ocarina of Time exploit.
After you successfully launched gateway menu, you need to install emuNAND and update it to the latest version, after you do that you can try a system transfer sysNAND > emuNAND.[/quote]

Using the Sky3DS OOT exploit, I can backup the N3DSXL sysNAND BEFORE installing GW, correct?

No, you can't use Sky3DS to back-up your sysNAND, all Sky3DS is being used for is launching OOT exploit which lets you enter Gateway mode.

And then using gateway you can back-up your sysNAND (9.2 or lower).

*facepalm*

I know....

I have a 3DSXL WITHOUT GW. I could go get a N3DSXL, use my Sky3DS to run exploit, backup N3DSXL sysNAND, install GW, TRANSFER...

I basically have to abandon the old 3DSXL for the N3DSXL, but once I get the new one up and running I can then dump ROMs and headers to share with the old one via Sky3DS. I get it, old one will never jailbreak. Moving on... Just want to SHARE games and play online with N3DSXL and Sky3DS.

Yeesh...

That should work, note that the system transfer is finicky on emunand as it restarts the system towards the end of the transfer and you have to run the exploit again. I heard the downloaded eShop stuff you have won't show up until you enter eShop and that somehow fixes it.
I haven't tried it myself yet but I am planning to do so in the near future, just need to get a bigger MicroSD for my n3DS first. I'm worried that I might accidentally update my sysNAND, or lose all my eShop purchases if the system transfer doesn't complete fully but other people have said it works so it should be OK.

So wouldn't it be better just to TRANSFER and THEN install GW? Or does the transfer require firmware update?

I'm already aware that eShop games can be re-downloaded AFTER GW is installed since GW has eShop access. So that's okay.

But does this mean the old 3DSXL loses all those games and data? Or does it function more like a COPY rather than a complete transfer?

I don't even understand what you're saying anymore.

Then stop posting.

I'm no expert but you would need to install gateway first on the new 3ds. Update emunand to 9.5. At that point you should be able to transfer your old 3ds to the new 3ds updated emunand.

Yeah, system transfer requires the latest firmware update.
The old XL will be like factory fresh after the transfer, everything you had on the old one will be on the new one instead, unless you back up the old XL NAND first with a hardmod and restore it afterwards.

Good, then I can hand the old one down to my nephew and use the Sky3DS to share games...

Yeah, I looked into the hardmods as well. I simply don't have a backup of my sysNAND. Thought I needed GW to do it, should've read more into sysNAND backups. I deeply regret it. I could be sitting on GW right now...

Just glad Sky3DS works at this point.
