So as we all know the NES games on virtual console have a billenear filter on them that causes them to be really blurry compared to the same games on the regular Wii virtual console. So to test this i downloaded one of the games (super mario bros 3) to see exactly how it looks. And yeah it looks blurry. But i had the idea that maybe increasing the "sharpness" setting on my tv could help the blurriness so i increased it to the maximum it could go.

Lo and behold, increasing the sharpness to maximum on my tv make it look the same if not better than the regular Wii virtual console super mario bros 3 version i have on vwii. Can someone explain to me why this happens? Can the sharpness settings on our tvs really counteract Blinear Filtering this way. Or am i simply going crazy?

you clearly dont get the point of what im asking. I want to know why this happens not which one is better. Im curious of how, technically speaking, can the sharpen option in our tvs cancel out bilinear filtering

Ummmm. The answer is no. Technically speaking, the sharpen option in our tvs cannot cancel out bilinear filtering. Do you think the tv is somehow able to control the Wii U's hardware/software? Is there some sort of output signal going from your television back to the Wii U telling it to disable the filtering when you use the sharpness control on your television? No. C'mon, use some common sense. Using the shapness control does exactly what it says, sharpens the image. There's no way possible that it could cancel out the filtering.

What the sharpness filter does is simply make edges sharper, giving the illusion of higher detail, which can to some degree counteract the bilinear filtering. However, it's not without its drawbacks, and I've turned it completely off on my TV as it gave certain things a halo around them, which was especially noticeable when reading text on my media PC.

there are halos on anything thats 1080p native (like the Wii U menu), funny enough theres no halos at all on the nes games. So what i do is that when i play a nes game i turn the sharpness up, but i stop playing I turn the sharpness down.

Actually I was talking to someone who knows about this stuff earlier today and he explained it like this. "Billinear filtering's purpose is to "improve" image quality by blurring the right angles in the pixels created by the upscaling of images. Our Tv's sharpness settings purpose is to "improve" the image by sharpening those right angles. So done correctly, it is totally possible for both effects to cancel each other out. Leaving the image how it looked originally or at least very close to it"

This also means that we can manually set the level of blillenear filtering we want on our NES games by how high you set the sharpness setting. While mostly useless to most people here that use homebrew emulators, i still think its an interesting tidbit of technical knowledge

But technically it's not doing that at all since the filter is still enabled. It's just offsetting the effect of it, we are not able to set the level of filtering.
