I was interested until I saw work was involved. That guy is good though.
Hahaha yeah laziness sometimes gets over me too.
I am quite interested in doing something like this for my New 3DS.
I want to grab a custom Majora's Mask sigil and put a design over the Black N3DS.
Perhaps the sigil could be blood-red or purple, it will look AWESOME! :D

Yeah, I could never pull this crap off... Mine would end up looking something like his did half way through stripping the paint off after screwing it up....... But at least I'd have an interesting tale as to why my 3ds looks like total rubbish

Oh the plus side, you will no longer leave fingerprints forever carved in the 3DS. :P

Gathering from the video, all you need is:
a design
some tape to cover some parts
2 colours of spray

(does he do the bottom? not sure if he does)
AFAICT he doesn't do the bottom.
I think the bottom of the Red 3DS is already black, so all he did was put a layer of gold paint firs, put the sticker above the gold paint, then repaint it again with a black colour, wait for it to dry and then remove the stickers to show the golden paint for the custom design.

He bottom was left untouched.
