How to SoftMod a Wii to Play Backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games

(Disclaimer: Stop in your tracks and visit
https://gbatemp.net/threads/modify-any-wii-4-3-below.171901/
It is a MUCH more updated tutorial for Soft-Modding your Wii. )

(If you new to Softmod a Wii this will give you a 100% safe guide from start-to-finish to play Wii Games, Gamecube Games and Wiiware/Virtual Console games from an USB-drive. Im not kidding. In this guide we only use official files to minimize any risks apart from Step 4 . But I can assure I used this guide to softmod my sister's Wii. She can now play Skyward Sword by USB-drive without problem! :) )

Requirements:
*SD Card (no SDHC)
*SD Card reader
*Wii updated to 4.3 (4.3 is latest version, just update your Wii and you be fine)
*Internet Connected Wii
*USB-hdd to store Wii games and Gamecube games
*To play Gamecube games you need this Wii Console and Gamecube Controller
(No Gamecube Memory Card is required if you use NMM)

A short description what each step does
Step 1 - You install Homebrew Channel to install Apps.
Step 2 - Safety Precaution. Backup Wii System (NAND) to your PC.
Step 3 - Safety Precaution. Install Priiloader to prevent disc updates to damage your Wii.
Step 4 - Patch IOS and Install WADs using Two Easy Apps. Install USB Loader GX to Play Wii Games .
Step 5 - Install a d2x Custom IOS to enable New Wii Games. Install DiosMios to Play Gamecube Games.
(Spoilers Window) Add 'n Play Wii/Gamecube Games + Update USB Loader GX (req for Gamecube games)
Step 6 - emulate Wii System (NAND) on USB-hdd making Add WiiWare/VC Games near impossible to damage your Wii .

1. Install Homebrew Channel

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video :

2. Backup Wii NAND (to restore your Wii if anything goes wrong)

Important! Make sure SD-card has more then 700mb free space
Important! Make sure your Wii has more then 700 blocks open. To Check: Turn on your Wii. Goto Wii Options - Data Management - Save Data - Wii. In 'Blocks Open:' there should stand 700 or higher. Then Return to Wii Menu. Press Back 4 times.
Follow S Winegars instructions in video :
- In BootMii use the Power button to cycle through options in the menu, and Reset to select.

1. When Wii NAND is backed-up using Project Phoenix Medias video guide. Shutdown Wii. Remove SD-card from Wii and put SD-card into Computer.
2. Open SD:\ and check that you have two following files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN'. Copy these two files into a safe location on your Computer. My tips is to save them into a usb-stick or Dropbox if your Computer crash.
3. Once you saved the two files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN' you should remove them from SD-card (NAND.BIN takes 500mb)
4. Done! :)

3. Install Priiloader (regionfree games and stop updates)

1. Plug SD-card into Computer
2. Download Priiloader_v0_7.zip . Unzip and Put it into your SD Card. (SD:\)
3. Download hacks_hash.ini - Scroll down to 'Pre-compiled Hacks download' , right-click, save link as, and save into SD:/apps/Priiloader/ .
4. Remove SD-card from Computer and plug into Wii . Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch Priiloader.
5. Press A to Install
6. Once Priiloader is installed shut down the Wii (Sometimes you Wii freezes after Priiloader installation. Its totally normal. Just re-start your Wii with reset and after Wi Menu appears shut down the Wii)

(configure Priiloader)
1. Press the "Power" button while holding down the "Reset" button on your Wii until the Priiloader menu is displayed on your screen.
2. In Priiloader select "System Menu Hacks". These are the following 7 hacks I suggest you select: 'Region free EVERYTHING', 'Block Disc Updates', 'Remove NoCopy Save File Protection', 'Block Online Updates', 'Remove Diagnostic Disc Check', 'Move Disc Channel', 'Auto Press 'A' at health screen'. Select Save Settings when Done.
3. To Exit Priiloader select System Menu
4. Done! :)

A video how to configure Priiloader can be found here :

PS: By having Priiloader you prevent disc updates that can damage Homebrew.

4. Install USB Loader and Custom ISO

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

Important! Skip 10:00 - 13:00 in the video. We will not use Wbfs Manager instead we use WiiBackupManager to add Wii games, explained in Part 5 - spoiler windows - Play Wii/Gamecube games from USB-hdd.

PS: Just so you know - I tried it myself. If you WiiWare wasn't working through emuNAND. Look in USBLoader GX - Settings - Credits, if your using the 'cIOS249-d2x-v10-beta52' it will not work! Go ahead and install IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad using Step 5 in this guide. Then Wiiware works. :)

Fix Blackscreen with VC in emuNAND
Happens when playing USA games with a European Wii. Open selected VC game - 'Settings' - 'Loader Settings'in 'Video Patch 'select Force NTFC. Press Save. Now it should work. :)

Use cheats (Ocarnia) in Wiiware/VC games
Unfortunely I can't get Ocarnia working with Wiiware/VC games in USB Loader GX. So an alternate solution is to use the App '....tbc

The benefit of emuNAND
WAD installation happens on Computer therefore there is NONE TO LESS risk of Brick your Wii. If you wish to play Wiiware/VC games emuNAND is your solution. period.

I tried to install bootmii, I downloaded //bootmii.org/download/ . I packed it up and put it in the root of the sd card, but HBC did not find any files, so I put it in a map which was named app. but still will not find HBC. what am I doing wrong, is getting crazy on this

Does this help ??

To get bootmii to work you must first install it with letterbomb. To do this go into the letters section of your wii locate the letterbomb (it is red and has a bomb sticking out of it) when you open it select the bootmii installer (It should be under the homebrew channel) Next time you open bootmii from the home brew channel it should load properly and not get stuck on a black screen. Note the wii controller will stop working this is normal you can use the buttons on the wii console to navigate the options. After you settup bootmii the controllers will work again.
Also if you have started bootmii before installing it from letter bomb and you are stuck on a black screen it is safe to turn of your wii.

Hi, thanks for the awesome tutorial and videos. I got everything to work as only for wii games. Lately most of the games have stopped working with USB loader GX and I am getting a black screen on 7/9 games that were previously working. I am sure I have the latest version as well, please advise what can be done.

Thanks

You can try installing the latest version of d2x with wii mod, d2x-v10beta53-alt .

You find the d2x file @ https://code.google.com/p/d2x-cios/downloads/list
Pick d2x-v10beta53-alt.zip and then install it like you did with the previous d2x file in step 5 .

Support,
A wiki over features in d2xv10 and d2xv10-alt + more specific what v10 does in comments field.
https://code.google.com/p/d2x-cios/wiki/How_to_choose_d2x_distribution

And DO NOT install anything from d2x google page with the name vWii in it
vWii stands for Virtual Wii and is ONLY used with WiiU

OBS! To Everyone!
If your USB-hhd isnt detected after following step 5, try to install v10-alt as mentioned above.
v10-alt has more usb support and could be the reason USB Loader GX cant detect your device.

No.

The reason I tell people to install IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad in step 5
is that I find many Wiiware games didnt work for me with alt-10 .

However lots of people has commented that their USB HDD cant be found
therefore i recommend this people to try d2x alt-10 instead as it has
better compability with USB HDDs .

I swap between installing the d2x mentioned in step5 and the d2x10-alt version
many times. and my Wii runs perfectly still.

I guess you have to reinstall diosmios if you swap d2x file but im not sure.

Thanks for the tutotial, Stephanie, it's very easy to follow for newcomers!

I'm just stuck at one small part. In step 4, you said skip HighTeckMan's video from 10:00 to 13:00. In that time frame, do we follow step 5 or do we just try to continue on with what he does in the rest of that video? Because I tried the latter and I got an exception in USB Loader.

Also, do you know if it's okay to use USB Thumb Drives rather than a hard drive?

I'm just stuck at one small part. In step 4, you said skip HighTeckMan's video from 10:00 to 13:00. In that time frame, do we follow step 5 or do we just try to continue on with what he does in the rest of that video? Because I tried the latter and I got an exception in USB Loader.

Also, do you know if it's okay to use USB Thumb Drives rather than a hard drive?

At this time frame, we follow step 5 -
We skip the segment in step4 after 10:00 - as it contains how to install a different Backup Manager for Wii.

What kind of exception are you getting, can you describe it more?

And, Wii accepts USB Thumb Drives but as I mentioned eariler you might need to install another d2x file - just go afew posts up... about d2x v10.
d2x v10 accepts more types of USB devices .

heres a compability list of USBs,

Awesome thread with tutorials, thank you! Just a quick question though - I'm getting a Wii from my buddy soon and I'm not sure what the FW version on it is yet. From what I can find, 4.3 is the FINAL FW released by Nintendo for the Wii. Is this correct, and will I be okay connecting to the internet to install the latest update via system settings?

Yupp.
its recommended to update your Wii from Settings before installing Homebrew, if u want to softmod it.
Just make sure your Wii isnt softmodded already.

Great thank you! It's not softmodded - yet! I'm staging my SD card and external drive while I wait for him to drop the Wii off. The video tutorials you posted are a lifesaver. FYI, the SNES video was taken down off of youtube but the rest are working. I'm sure there's another place to figure out how to do it. Once I have the softmod and wad's and the homebrew channel all figured out it should be easy to find/install one for snes and get it working.

I tried this guide and 6-7 others to get gamecube games to run but my Wii simply refuses to do so.

Every time I try to load a iso File for F-Zero I get a black screen after I selected it in either Wiiflow or Dios Mios. I checked the compatibility List but the game is not on it.

Now i was thinking of testing my Dios Mios with another game but I dont know wich one is the best for that purpose.

So, what would be the best game to test if Dios Mios is working correctly?

As USB HDD I use a 2TB Western Digital MyBook, formatet in Fat32 as told on page 1 of this thread.

P.S.: Installing my Wii Library worked like a charm, playing them from USB HDD aswell, but when I try to install one of my Gamecube games I get a black screen aswell.

Option 1 - check if your USB device is cluster size 32kb .

Alternatively, connect the drive to your pc. Open up Notepad and type "hello" (no quotes) and save it to your drive. Right-click on the saved file, click Properties and look at the "Size on Disk". If it says 32kb then your drive should be formatted correctly. Anything else Dios Mios won't work correctly.

Option 2 - Try another gamecube game. I have got zelda Wind Waker to work and Paper Mario : The thousand-year door. See if another game give up a blackscreen as well .

Option 3 - If option 1 is cluster size 32kb and no other games work. Try using a different Usb HHD or your SD card. If you gonna use SD card - change Diosmios to diosmios lite. Theres instruction how to change to diosmios lite in step5's spoilers window .. GL :)

I'll also add that a 2TB drive formatted as FAT32 is not ideal. I would set up two partitions on it, one being FAT32 and another being NTFS or exFAT. Or even getting a second smaller drive. I'm using a 250GB and am holding all of my GC/Wii backups without any space issues.

O.o

250 GB is kind of small, my Wii collection right now breaks the 100 GB and I am still planing on getting more games since you can get them for basicaly nothing at e-bay or fleamarket. Given, that gamecube games have roughly 1 GB I could fill up another 30+ with them.

What HDD are you using?

Anyway, the Fat32 is formated like the guide described, did it twice just to be on the safe side.

Will try the splitup in smaller partitions, could I create one partition for Wii games and one for Gamecube?

EDIT: To solve the potential HDD Problem, would it be better to try single games with an USB Stick or are HDD best?
