So, tomorrow I am planning to purchase two MH4U retail carts (I have two 4.x systems with Gateway-flashcards running emuNAND 9.5). It is more convenient for me to have all my games running of a SD-card, rather than carrying multiple carts around.

Here is my plan:
- Dump the carts using Gateway to get proper private headers in order to be able to play MH4U online (it will be interesting to see if I will get banned or not, as I will be using the actual private retail cart headers for MH4U).
- Play the game offline and online in emuNAND.

A couple of questions though.
- Question 1: Is it possible inject the Gateway save-files into the retail carts again in case I want to play using the carts? Reasoning here is that I get better battery time if playing using carts?
- Question 2: Can I play the retail carts in Gateway classic mode and saves are stored on the actual carts? Not sure if this option is possible due to my sysNANDs being 4.x. Thinking of the encryption keys loaded at boot-time.

Question 2 option may be a bit dangerous as I might in fact update my sysNAND if the cart is started in sysNAND by mistake at some point. But then again I might as well downgrade as I doubt the system update carried on those carts are 9.2+.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for your reply. Question 2 is no worries then. Just need answers if my options are doable or not.

1. No
2. Yes

1. Could be possible with an Action Replay powersave but I don't know. It is the only way to flash a save file on a retail cart as far as I know.

Great answers!

Last question, when I have dumped my retail cart I will make it a 3DZ-file to be able to play online. Now, is there any way to make a 3DS save work with this 3DZ ROM? I have played a couple of hours today on a scene release.

Might have found something, the following tutorial on how to share a save would likely work:

_Install save data filer in cia
_load the game in emunand but dont launch it
_launch savedatafiler
_Make a backup of your save to your SD
_Quit and turn of 3ds
_Put the SD on PC and find the file "main" in directory "filer"
_Put mine instead of the old at the same place
_Put the SD on 3DS and charge your game without launching him
_Start savedatafiler go in SD category and export from SD to cart
_When finish close savedatafiler launch game and enjoy !!!!

There are several problems with that:
  • Retail carts don't work in Gateway Mode currently (so your retail cart wouldn't be detected in SaveDataFiler)
  • You can't launch CIAs in Classic Mode (meaning you can't launch SaveDataFiler)
  • Gateway Mode on systems with sysNAND 6.x+ still doesn't use the proper save encryption/decryption keys (so even if you could launch SDF with a retail cart showing up in GW mode, the save would appear as "broken", for people with newer systems. It's not an issue in this OP's case per-se, but it's still something to be aware of)
So that leads us to answer the original questions as follows:

- Question 1: Is it possible inject the Gateway save-files into the retail carts again in case I want to play using the carts?

No, because you can't launch SaveDataFiler in Classic Mode, which is the only place your retail carts would be recognised. On the Gateway Mode side, no, because you can't use retail carts in Gateway Mode, meaning you cannot extract their saves or re-import them with SaveDataFiler. It's a paradox/conundrum many are going through right now.

- Question 2: Can I play the retail carts in Gateway classic mode and saves are stored on the actual carts? Not sure if this option is possible due to my sysNANDs being 4.x. Thinking of the encryption keys loaded at boot-time.

Yes you can, but the save encryption will be using the wrong keys, so do not play these cartridges on 3DSes with sysNANDs that are 6.x or higher, unless you want those saves to be deleted (most games will delete "corrupted" saves immediately upon booting).[/quote]
