As someone who has a regular 3DSXL and is sadly updated to system menu 9.4, am I alone here or are there others in the same boat as me? I've noticed the big thing everyone is talking about is support for the New 3DS.

Is it silly for me to be hopeful that something comes along in the near future for 9.4, given that?

Depends. Might be if you consider "an year" equal to "near future" (that's what it took for the <9.2 exploit to come out)
Swap your 3ds for another one.

No its not silly, its your personal decision on how you want to go about this.

Is there a reason to suspect that this would take that long as well? Or simply that there's no reason to .. not suspect this?

I'm not really sure how I'd go about swapping my 3DS for another one without losing a significant amount of money, personally. Though I suppose the larger question, for me, isn't whether or not I can wait a year -- I absolutely can, with so many PC and Xbox One games to play -- but whether or not I should continue to hold off updating while I hope something is coming. I guess my big question was whether or not this new focus on the N3DS would make my "needs" superfluous and unimportant.

9.5 has the same exploitability as 9.4 on the old 3ds. you can update if you want.

Well right, but we're talking bigger picture here -- I'm less concerned about 9.4 to 9.5 and more with the overall ... expectancy, I suppose. For what it's worth, my desire to update has less to do with me wanting to access the eShop and more with an uncontrollable OCD compulsion to have everything updated to the latest and greatest.

9.4 at least has a chance (9.5 knocked down yet another bug which was important to use after gaining ARM9 kernel), but I wouldn't count on it unless the US (small) N3DS launched with it, if it ever comes to the US. But even then it's still a rather small thing to support given that every first generation 3DS ships with a vulnerable firmware and probably always will (not sure if they manufacture the things anymore given that they want people buying the New 3DS). Seriously though, don't get your hopes up, it could be a while before anything is found (like, years at least)

are you talking about the new key introduced for the N3DS only?

That's a shame ... I suppose I'll have to give up on using a flash cart then. Thanks for the info -- it's rather hard to find this kind of information buried in these very deep threads.

Well there's still sky, but that's basically only if you want piracy and nothing but piracy (no homebrew, region free, .cia, etc). Seems to work for some people, I personally rely a bit too much on the other features and hardly even use the Gateway cart (it's too unstable with all my SD cards I give it :/)

I guess in a way that's what I'm going for. I care little for all the extra features, as I have plenty of other devices to cover that stuff. But it's less about, say, not paying for games and more about ease of use ... I've been buying games at about a steady pace of once per month and don't mind the price, and use Gamefly otherwise, but I always liked having it on the one cart/SD card. What is the concern with Sky3DS if that were the use case?

Mostly it being blocked, Gateway is a bit more permanent in that you only have to get it installed once and then you have a usable emuNAND which can be freely updated. sky3DS works by emulating an actual cart, but like DS flash carts it can still be blocked eventually. It's seemed to survive a few updates, but I'd be careful with it if you like online.

do we know if sky will be compatible with the N3DS XL? It seems worth getting with the extra features and I don't mind dropping the money for a sky chip.

I'm wondering whether the Gateway team will figure out the flaw with the New 3DS 9.5.0 crypto that yellows8 did. If they do figure it out, we will get EmuNAND for New3DS. This'd mean that you should buy a New 3DS. I think that this will happen eventually, so if you have faith in Gateway and don't mind spending $300, why not this plan?:

1. Buy a brand new Old 3DS XL off the shelf for $200 or less. Or buy a used one <= 9.2.0 for cheaper.
2. Downgrade its SysNAND to 4.5.0. All
3. Set up EmuNAND and upgrade it to 9.5.0.
4. System transfer your SysNAND 9.4.0 3DS to the EmuNAND 9.5.0 3DS.
5. Trade in your SysNAND 9.4.0 3DS to LameStop for $100 credit toward a New 3DS XL preorder, paying an extra $100.

Then you'd have a hacked Old 3DS XL and a hackable New 3DS XL for whenever Gateway releases a hack for it (I recommend waiting for EmuNAND).

Up to you; just one idea.

Hi shinyquag <3

Yeah but I mean, I'm not really interested in a N3DS -- the controller nub is pointless by and large and I'm not interested in the one exclusive announced thus far. I'm also not sure why I'd trade in my old 3DS XL for less than it can be sold for ... also, is there a guarantee that buying a 3DS XL off the shelf is under 9.4? I might consider doing that but probably not until I run out of new games to play ... Anyway, I think my point is that your scenario seems oddly specific and it's definitely not an option for me! I'd be out a couple hundred bucks in that case, with nothing really to show for it!

I suppose my opening post may have come off as wanting a N3DS but I'm not interested for the time being.

most 3DS XL's have copyright 2012 on the box...so one would assume :P

Honestly I've tried the N3DS XL and how they did the 3D is well worth the money ^.^

there is no real reason you would take that much of a hit, just ask around if any friends or family are planning to buy a 3DS (who wouldn't be interested in flashcards) then see if they will buy one and swap it with you, i would say at this point all brand new consoles on the shelves will be gateway compatible, and the large majority of second hand consoles too.....or you could sell your 3ds now and upgrade to a n3ds.....or just buy a sky3ds.....truth is, you could just sell yours on a local trading site like gumtree/craigslist (that kind of thing) then just buy another one for round about the same price, you would only be taking a major loss if you do some sort of trade in at a store

or just get a sky3ds and keep checking before running any updates just to make sure its all still ok for sky3ds
