This is my first post here, I just joined the forum.
So I went ahead and bought a black refurbished 3DS XL off of Nintendo's website today. I then bought the Gateway cart right after, so I kinda bought the 3DS and Gateway simultaneously. (might have been a not so good idea.)
Since Gateway is only compatible with firmware up to 9.2, what firmware will the refurbished 3DS XL most LIKELY be on when I receive it? Do they update every 3DS to the most current firmware during the refurbishing process? I'm really nervous about this, since I bought the 3DS with using the Gateway in mind. For those of you who have purchased refurbished 3DS XL's from Nintendo's site before, what firmware did yours come with? What are the chances that I get a unit that is not compatible with Gateway? Thanks

Hmm, It would be logical for them to update the unit.
You can hope what you ordered is old stock with old FW

What would you think are the chances? I've heard that other people who've bought refurbished 3DS's from Nintendo got theirs with FW lower than 9.2. I've even heard buying it in retail will still get you a unit lower than 9.2.

I've never really bought anything straight from Nintendo, so I can give any numbers. I've only dealt with Amazon and Ebay.
Do they have a return policy?

Buying retail right now is guaranteed to get you 9.2 or below as no one has reported getting a 9.3 system out of the box

Let's hope the same is true for a refurb. Was the price significantly better?

Official Nintendo refurbished 3DS XL's are currently at $135. I got the black one, if that makes any difference. Hopefully it's also 9.2 or below.

No way to know how many they had in stock from before the 9.3/9.4 release. So any percentage is speculation. 50/50?

$135 plus shipping does not seem like enough of a discount to me as retailers have them as low as $150 on sale.

Nintendo servicing updates your 3DS to the most recent firmware. It's just a matter of how long ago did they repair your 3ds.

Worst case scenario you can resell your GW for a good price, considering the fact that GW prices are rising up. You might even find someone willing to trade a Sky3DS for your Gateway straight.

You're screwed.

my thoughts exactly. The prices of the XL dropped today or yesterday I believe. I am seeing them at Gamestop and Best Buy for 174.99..

You could have paid a little extra and get a brand new one 100 percent sure to get 9.2 or lower.

Thanks for the suggestion. I hope that doesn't turn out to be the case.

Why does brand new guarantee 9.2 or lower, but refurbished doesn't? Does Nintendo actually go through and update every single unit during the refurbishing process?

Why wouldn't they? It benefits them.

That's totally true. It's just that I've seen/heard other users' experienced with buying refurb 3DS's from Nintendo, and all of theirs seem to have come in a version that is <9.2, so I guess I'm just trying to reassure myself.

Well, only reason to be scared is if what you bought is cutting edge refurbished stock, or Ninty sent a message to update them to 9.5

But those reports are in the PAST, they didn't order them TODAY. :)

I would be pretty pissed off if N didn't reflash the FW if I bought a refurb. I don't want remnants of the previous user laying around. Why would they do that with some discontinued FW? They are always going to use the latest available at the time of the refurb.

That makes sense. In this particular situation, I'm in the opposite boat of you. I really hope that they didn't update it, so that I can use it with Gateway.

When did they say it would arrive?

I just bought it yesterday on the 6th, and the order on the website still says it's processing. I've heard that they ship faster to the west coast (which is where I am), since that's where their warehouse is or something, so I guess delivery time will vary.
