I am asking because I bought a couple of R4's a couple years back and they both got blocked by updates.

Thinking about picking up a flashcart or modding my 3DS but would like to find out more. I've modded my 360, ps2,ps3 and Wii\Wii u so I am fairly confident in my ability, just need some info.

Thanks!

You just have Sky3DS and QQ3DS for now, if you are on 9.4 (latest fw).
I believe QQ3DS has the ability to play DS games while Sky3DS doesn't. You might want to check that out since it does what you want.
No modding or downgrading for either of those cards, but they can easily be patched by Nintendo and can't be upgraded as easily as Gateway, so be careful about it.

I am just more or less wanting to get one that won't be blocked or if there is a way to use an emunand or virtual update. Basically I play the shit out of my smash cartridge and would hate to not be able to go online anymore out of fear of updating.

Looking more or less for 1 of each or 1 that does both

I think the best play is wait for the new 3DSL and see what firmware it has. If less than 9.2 then you can trade in your current 3DS and go gateway. Or just sell your 3DS and buy a used 3DS on 9.2 or lower.

There is a really high risk with Sky or clones of getting permanently patched out, less so with gateway.

ability you say?, more like an extra card to play DS games
qq3ds its basically a plastic box with a sky3ds card and a r4 both with qq3ds logo...

to be fair, 2 cards (a 3ds one and a ds one) is not an ability...

Sky3ds have 31 games limit. (Wasn't it unlimited???)
If you have old 3DS with 9.2 or lower than buy GW
It does not, the limit applies to entries on the SD card. You can flash 31 (or 32, I don't remember) per SD card and you can change them at any time, there's no limit for the flashcart itself.

Given the cards limitations, if I had one I wouldnt want more than 10 or so games on an mSD card at a time anyway. Better to just carry around extra cards in this case.

Yeah cycling through 31 is a pain. Also, I don't think most people would ever get to that limit :P
