Hello, i was wondering if i could install a .CIA of my retail games and restore the save from my retail card to the .CIA using Nintendo's Save Data Transfer Tool? Because Gateway can't backup the save of almost all my retail games, would this work?

Nope, the Nintendo tool can't detect cias. You can install the cfw on another sd card and use SaveDataFiler on this. (It won't work on 6.X games though)

Just install the cfw on another sd card -> install savedatafiler on the cfw -> Run savedatafiler with your cartdrige inserted.

1. Directly transferring retail carts with SDF requires CFW.
2. Indirectly transferring retail carts with SDF requires MT-card.

Steps:
2-1. Confirm that your retail cart save isn't either 6.0 encrypted or 128KB. Otherwise it's unsupported.
2-2. If your cart save is 2.2 Card2 (such as Animal Crossing, to be notice that Pokemons are all 6.0 Card2 so unsupported), then just dump ROM and put it to GW-Red/MT-White card to use SDF to read it.
2-3. If your cart save is 2.2 Card1 512KB, please dump both ROM and save, then put them into MT-White card to use SDF to read it. (GW can't recognize the save because saves aren't inside the Red card)

A method to SDF dump 6.0 encrypted save or 128KB save:

1) BUY the game's e-shop version.
2) Use official savedata transfer tool to move the save into e-shop version.
3) SystemTransfer the console into GW/MT emuNAND.
4) Use SDF to dump it.

You are not able to
1) use CIA in classic mode
2) recognize retail cart in GW mode
so that's why you should pay money for eShop game for that.

Is there a eshop version of asphalt 3d?

I couldn't get official save data transfer tool to work in classic made,
Because it could not recognise the cia compiled version of asphalt 3d

It should be noted that this only works on >6.x SysNAND. I tried this before GW Ultra was out on my 4.x console and naturally the savedata transfer tool was unable to transfer the save due to missing keys (didn't know about this problem at that point). 50 bucks down the drain... not gonna buy the fucking game a third time, hope GW fixes this situation soon(TM)...

It doesn't work with the gateway tool, but it works with on cfw+sdf as long as it's not a 6.X game.

in that case, my prayers have finally been answered (and I was too blind to see the solution right in front of me!)
Time to install CFW.

edit:

1. took forever to get into cfw
2. took time to setup 4.5 emunand for cfw (because I already unlinked sys and emu, so needed original emu 4.5 nand. luckily, I made backups back then)
3. needed SDF that works with cfw
4. now testing transfer.
5. bugginess of cfw is killing me inside

This is too complicated, i'm just wondering, can i get a .CIA with my save from CFW AND use that same .CIA with my own retail save on my Gateway emuNAND?

Sorry, did not understand what you are saying.

okay it's not that complicated, as I finally got it to work.
It's just a pain in the ass to execute cause CFW is buggy.

Here is how I got it to work:

1. Have different SD cards
Use a different SD card for CFW.

2. Install CFW.
I followed "Part 2" of the steps here: http://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-4-5-sysnand-4-5-cfw-9-4-emunand-without-gateway.378721/
Except that I did not install devmenu/bigbluemenu.
I ONLY installed savedatafiler that works for CFW.

3. Use SDF to backup retail carts
Once in CFW, I insert retail cartridge, and back up the user save. (bottom screen, left tab, top most option (might read as "CTR"))
If need to back up more than one cartridge, exit SDF -> change cart -> enter SDF

4. Insert CFW SD card onto PC, and copy the entire "FILER" folder
The root of the SD card, should have a folder called "Filer".
copy it, as it contains all the backed up, decrypted saves.

5. Paste "Filer" into GW SD card, and import the saves!
Enter Savedatafiler on GW.
bottom screen, third tab.

It will show a list of entries, which the last values are usually the title id.
(Example user: <some values> : 00000308<- the underlined values are the title id. this example is mario kart)

when you move up and down on d-pad, different items will be highlighted.
To import the save to the cia game, just press R+A (import this user save data to SD Card)

I got my Asphalt 3D progress transferred over, like finally!

Note: I made my Asphalt 3D cia to have the correct save size (128KB).
Not sure if this will affect importing, if save sizes are different.
Probably not though, as I assume SDF will encrypt to fit the correct size..?

Thanks for correcting my previous post :)

A method to SDF dump 6.0 encrypted save (ver. 2):

1) Buy the game's e-shop version on a console having latest SysNAND.
2) Use official savedata transfer tool to move the save into e-shop version.
3) SystemTransfer the console into GW/MT emuNAND.
4) Use SDF to dump it.

A method to SDF dump 128KB 2.2 encrypted save:

1) Use either the method above or CFW.

CFW method by Queno138 (#19 in this post)
