Hey, I've had this problem ever since I bought my tablet, in October, but I always forget to ask, so here it is:

I have a cheap Chinese tablet that I got from eBay (model is Q88 A23, android version is 4.4.2, screen: 7inch, 480x800), and the newest version of YouTube from Play Store.

No matter which video I play, when I go to "Quality", I only get 144p, 240p and 360p. Is there a way to watch videos in 480p or 720p?

Does anyone else having this problem on their phone/tablet and can it be fixed?

I have a similar issue.
1) Go to your youtube video
2) Click "Request Desktop Site"
3) Wait for the page to load
4) Click on the fullscreen button
5) Change the quality to 720p or whatever you want
6) Play the video

This worked for me

That's for the browser, what about the app? :/

RevPokemon you obviously only read the title. In the post I stated that pressing the Quality button only brings 144p, 240p and 360p up.

The app is no good. Use the Internet browser or TRY a 3rd party YouTube app.
This is a good idea. Also worth noting is the fact that the YouTube app won't play audio in the background or with the screen off.
I personally like Viral. It has windowed video playback which is nice, and it can play in the background or with the screen off.

Since this tablet has onscreen buttons, that might be why the YouTube app won't let you play 480p. As far as the app is concerned, your effective screen size is smaller than 480p, so it won't give you the option for 480p.
A 3rd party app might let you do that though.

Apps can't play background music anymore it's against play store rules

Pretty much this.

There's no reason to even attempt to run 720p videos on your device, since your resolution isn't even high enough to view it properly. 480p should be fine, though, even with the onscreen buttons it should be more than enough  But regardless, what Jdbye said is right, look for a third party app if you really want to try 480p

But the official YouTube app doesn't have background playback. That's the problem.

No, the problem in this thread was Youtube video quality settings, not background playback, that's all off topic. Either way, there are plenty of mods to the official Youtube app that allows this. You can actually enable Background listening in Youtube if you have one of those Music Key subscriptions, too, as an official option.

As for Revpokemon's completely wrong statement about no apps allowing background audio, he's completely wrong. Nowhere does it state this in any of Google's policies for the Play store, which you can read for yourself here: https://play.google.com/about/developer-content-policy.html

Was referring to this. https://developers.google.com/youtube/terms which viral stated was why they removed background listening

The issue you're having is from the version of Google's YouTube app. You will need an older version of youtube to view videos in HQ. I have the same spec tablet but a larger screen and YouTube version 3.55 allows HQ mode that's not featured on the newer builds.

You can download the file here and its currently on page 3 http://www.irulu.com/DownLoad/driver
Just search a few of the pages if its moved or try googling it. enjoy
