Hello, I'd like to begin by introducing myself. I am a nineteen year old novice C++ programmer from Michigan, U.S. I had not followed the 3DS scene much, as I saw it as just another rendition of the original DS, which I did not find to be majorly impressive for anyone above the age of thirteen. I have, however, always enjoyed homebrew possibilities. Something about running things where they are not supposed to is exciting.

I first learned of Smea's work from a friend in a rather geeky group I am part of on Facebook. It blew me away, and the idea of running these apps on the 3DS had me sold from the get-go. I went, purchased a 2DS, and an edition of Cubic Ninja. My copy of the game should come sometime this upcoming week. Upon the arrival of my 2DS, I turned it on, and in all of its glory, it shipped with firmware version 8.1.0-19U! I was relieved, hoping that I had not just purchased a 100 USD Pokémon Machine. I was not worried about running such an outdated firmware until I began reading all of the new features that came with 9.0. I thought that the screenshot and theme features would be awesome to use, as I am planning to dismantle my 2DS, and paint the accent plates a light gray. They are not necessary for me to enjoy homebrew, but they'd be nice, you know?

My Questions:
• Is there a way to update to a firmware that is not the most current, without updating to the most current? (I.E. The last firmware known to run Ninjhax.)
• Am I able to install the exploit via Cubic Ninja, then update my firmware, and still run the homebrew application? (Smea seems to be unsure of this, as per his Twitter. From what I have collected, the initial exploit works by side-loading code through the QR scan, and the save data is downloaded via the internet. Smea has stated that the two firmwares that Nintendo has released patched one, then two of the exploits he knew. I am curious if updating after you've installed the save data is possible, as they shouldn't be able to fill what has already be exploited.)
• Is there a way to screenshot/use themes without being updated? (Homebrew alternatives would be genuinely accepted.)

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

find a game that has the firmware update embedded within the cart and update using the cart with your wifi turned off. Unfortunately there is no game cart with a firmware witt or above 9.0. I can't see Nintendo releasing a came cart with these firmwares as they updated to 9.3 to avoid the homebrew scene specifically. Your best bet is to either buy a 2DS with the firmware already on it or, get a gateway card and downgrade back to 4.5 with the new tool that comes with gateway v3.0, as per there website states. maybe someone else will chime in with an alternative to my solution.

Also to answer your second question, the menu screenshot is only available in 9.0 firmware, but the theme creator has a screenshot portion in it. Not sure if the new homemenu_extdatatool will work with firmware below 9.0. I know it can use basic themes to write over, but you won't have the theme menu, so.... someone else want to answer this question

Snipped for space, and thank you for your input.

Hmm, it had never crossed my mind as to purchase a game with a firmware requirment. That is a brilliant idea, mate!

As for the screenshot and theme abilities, I had only speculated that it was possible to add these features through homebrew as I had seen the theme exploit for 9.0+ altered certain files outside of the cartridge. Whether or not these files are system related or SDHC related is unknown to me, so I figured I'd ask. Maybe I will have to look in to it myself after I get my cartridge.

Ah, you are my savior! I have bookmarked, and hopefully I will be able to find a U.S. game that is capable of pushing me to this firmware. From my understanding, I should just put the cartridge in, and it will tell me I need to update via the cartridge with my networking shut off, no?

Alas, the I am as close as I can possibly get at this moment. I quickly realized I could regenerate the list by firmware, as opposed to by name. The only thing that is in need of 9.0 firmware is a 3DSware theme, which is what has put me here in the first place.

Bad news, your 3ds can't run ninjhax atm.

Good news, Gateway will add support for 8.x.x systems soon. You'll have to buy a gateway (I'd wait for the support to actually be released) then you'll be able to boot ninjhax from there using emunand. At least that's how it works on 4.5 systems, who knows if newer firmwares will be as flexible.

There's also waiting for newer games to come out and see if they have the 9.2 update. I can see that happening.

I think I may be missing something you are not. Smea's webpage seems the think other than you do.

My firmware seems to work perfectly with his QR code generator.
I think your right. Jamieyollo might bee mistaken. You have a 2DS, not a New3DS, so it should work. And they pretty much covered everything else ^^^^^

Yes, I do believe this thread may have come to a close.
Yeah, I think this is pretty muched finished. Have fun hacking your 2DS :)

I wonder if you can use custom themes even though you don't have the theme menu on you 2ds, it might be possible. You should ask yellows8 if it works without it.

I was only curious because I had noticed from various posts here on the forum and from various videos that it seems that you are simply injecting SaveData.dat into extdata. I am not very knowledgeable to this, but I wonder if that can be recreated in some way.

Any way I can get a hold of Yellows8?

You can't change the theme with NINJHAX without firmware 9.0 or higher.
Pretty soon 3DS games will start shipping with a firmware over 9.0 included which you should be able to use to update your system.
The best way to get a hold of yellows8 would be to try and find him in the #3dsdev IRC channel.

Hmm, seems I may have to wait until games are shipped. Thank you, much.

Also, Yellows8 didn't seem to be in that room. Edit: I was pointed to efnet, looked, wasn't there, was told he is. Now I am confused.
