Found this pearl on a mac related website:

It is rare that you run into RAR files online, but in the event that you do, this unrar utility will come handy and allow you to handle the contents of the RAR file with ease.

Found on this page, at the end of the article:

http://www.maclife.com/article/columns/terminal_101_extracting_rar_files

I thought maybe the article was extremely old, but no... April 22, 2013. I guess this guy doesn't use the internet too much.:P

RAR is pretty common, along with ZIP and 7z.

Do watch out for RAR5 though. They use the same file extension as RAR but are not backward compatible. You'll need WinRAR 5+ or latest version of PowerArchiver to extract them.

What I still see often is people breaking a rar into many parts, then rar all the parts trying to make it smaller. It drives me crazy when I see people upload compressed 99% compression ratio files. I mean seriously, I don't even think Scrooge is stingy enough to save ink by writing 1 or 2 less letters per paragraph. Not only do you make me uncompress what is pretty much the original file (thus taking up double the space + time to uncompress to whole thing), you do it again to waste even more of everybody's space and time?!

To me it feels as if RAR files had been a lot more common a decade ago than they are today. Back in, say, 2006, half the files were RAR and half were ZIP, but these days, the files I get are mostly zip or 7z.

WinRAR is terrible if compared with 7z or Zip and shareware... Still it's very common nowdays, I think people find icon cute or something. :wtf:

"RAR is very popular especially for file distribution over the web, where the error recovery capability is a welcome advantage over other file formats."

Well, I still think it's cuz the colorful icon...

To an extent I agree because people eventually become so use to something they just use it regardless of how it works

RAR5 (the newest format) is technically superior to 7z and blows ZIP out of water. Recovery record and BLAKE2 checksum are something you're just not going to find on other format.

Although WinRAR is a shareware, you can still use it after 45 days (it'll just remind you to purchase it each time you launch the program). It is the least invasive shareware you'll find.
