Hardware Playing online - Japan New 3DS with US 3DS?

I got my boyfriend a Nintendo 3DS XL (US) for Christmas. I'm heading to Japan next month and considering picking up the New 3DS XL for myself. My question is, will we be able to play online games together with him on a US console and me on a Japanese console?

Should work online but I think local will not work between different region 3DS.

Some games can go multi-region local multiplayer. Like SF4, Pokemon, Smash(?).

As for the topic... Yes you can go online with JP and US

yes, local depends on the game, mario kart 7 does not work, but nsmb2 seemed to work for me.
it's a game by game basis, sorry.
