Okay, you're probably clicking on this thread and saying" This guy can't get custom firmware on a 3ds... Well you're right! I don't personally have a custom firmware, yet... But I can confirm it is soon to come..Sooner than everyone thinks. Check this out!!

Yes, that's right, I don't really know how to program a main frame, or crack the 3ds system, but I do know logic! I emailed the gateway team, and of course a few days later I got a response... With what I "asked" anyone can back up their emunand and flash whatever firmware they want. Since the emunand had to have your special system encryption that is for your system only. and if we can find out how gateway makes their emunands, then we can use that to make a custom firmware fully!!! The perks of the flashed emunand is that the system cant receive updates from Nintendo so that'll solve accidentally upgrading your system nand. By the way, It wont be the 9.2.0.20 release, but hopefully the very next one, gateway will have what they said in the email to me!!!! Now this may seem like a long shot, but it really isn't. This is easy to do as long as we can learn how to back up a emunand and even edit it. And as far as my logic is thinking right now, it would be impossible to use these custom firmwares to screw up the 3ds such as it does with the ps3. There can't be any modding and changing the game to hell as far as I know... But of course once you dump your 3ds game file to a computer then screw with it, yeah it will be hacked but It would be a little hard to get online unless you get a online patch and mod that then reflash it to your 3ds. but it's easier said then done!! So as far as the whole modding crap, it's not going to happen any further then it already is. at least not for awhile.... But I thought everyone would love to know this information. And hey, it could further the hacking community and crack the 3ds right open!!!

how do you think you will be able to downgrade if you are on the newest (as in, unexploitable firmware), and why would you want to?
you would only want to downgrade if you couldn't, and if you could... you have no reason to, since you have nand access. (assuming all the goodies we have on 4.5 will be brought to the newer exploit) :)

you say you know a little about making custom firmwares, how much is a little? :)

If gateway thinks they can make custom firmware, they must have access to the bootloader then? Which, I highly doubt!

:rofl2:

Well at least they can read half of it.
Anw it's a software that modifies the stock system software to change the way it works, therefore a CFW.

It doesn't modify the stock firmware. It just gives you more access.

It might be just be me, but i wouldn't conclude that a modified NAND image being booted from removable media inside the console and then having to navigate through menus with buttons presses to actually launch, constitutes the definition of "custom firmware"

PSP, PS3 etc. Power on device, boot directly to customized firmware. Enjoy hax. Thats CFW.

But what do i know. I'm just a dirty gbatemp pirate ;)

This... Right here... The firmware is still stock. Emunand is as close as you can get to CFW.. But it still is not.
