Title says it all really...

My 9 yr daughter loves Pokemon, and I haven't really let her go much online,
However I think she is now about ready...
I've set up the wifi properly and the updated the firmware (emunand) and the game has downloaded the 1.2 patch.
I was able to immediately got a free gift (a beldum).
The only other option I could see was a live tournament, which I tried to connect to,
the 3ds just hung trying get an ID.

I looked online kept getting stuff relating to the Pokemon website.
Do i need to sign up as trainer on the website in order to get an online ID?

What does game actually offer in terms of going online, and what to do I need to do to get it to work?
and is it worth jumping through all the hoops required?

Thnx

When you are in the in game world, on the bottom screen you will notice apps. Click on the CSS app. You have the functionality of trading, battling, wonder trading (random trade) , global trade center to search for specific pokemon and a lot of other things. Let her discover it :)
For online rated battles, you need to register. But at her age, I wouldn't bother with rated battles. She will keep losing. Rated battles are for strategists who wants to be ranked.

Tournaments you have to sign up for on the pokemon website ahead of time. Everything else you do not have to sign up for. Most online features only show up while in game, and its mainly trading and battling related. Theres an in game menu to access these once you reach a certain point. Unlike X and Y there isn't a friend safari so you don't need to worry about having a friends list on the 3ds for catching pokemon.

I do believe you have to sign up on the website. The online features include online trading, battling, and very limited voice chatting. If you use it with their Global Link, I do believe there's more things you can do on there. There's also parental control options through the website, so you can limit what your daughter is allowed to do on the site and on the game online.

Thanks ShawnTRods... (for the quick reply)
I've seen the apps, Having not played the game, I wasn't sure what they all were and only had given them a quick look...
I'll find CSS app and then let her do the rest.
As for the online rated, is that accessed from the main menu? (before the game starts).
I probably won't bother, for the reasons you mentioned, but I am just curious as to why I did'nt get an ID, (I waited about 6-7 mins, which should have been more than enough), Would I have needed to sign up on the website, or can you directly sign-up on the 3ds?

Thx

How does the website link to the individual 3ds/game?
I'm happy for her to use the 3ds to go online, but she only uses the PC/Pad when we monitor her..
If she signs up, will she have to keep accessing a PC/Pad or can she then just use her 3ds?

It's worth nothing that the game loves throwing voice chat prompts at you. If those can be disabled via global link (I dunno, never tried anything like that) that may be worth doing.

Ok thanks,
I will have a look to see if I can disable the voice chat.

When you go on the PSS app, you will find all the online functionality there. Including game sync. When you register game sync you get a code. You use that code to register on the pokemon global link for rated battles and tournaments. But as I said, you don't need to do that for her. She doesn't need rated battles or tournaments. She can trade, battle, wonder trade, GTS search trade and everything without registering the game :)
Although as mentioned, the voice chat can be disabled that way with parental control.

Thx again ShawnTRods
I think I understand now... :-)
I'll let try the other stuff, and when she's ready I'll eventually let her try a couple of tournaments...
if only to let her get beaten, just to show her, how good the competition can be....
Then I'll have learn the game in order to help her....
Sigh... what we do for our kids :-) (they force us to play even more games ;-) )

Thanks for the info nicklesminer, how do you link your online ID to the game/3ds?

(Apologies for the double posting...)

Voice chats can be disable through parental controls on the system.

To link your game to your online ID, you need to create an account on the website. Then you would access gamesync (one of the options on the PSS when you connect to the internet.) It will then give you a serial number/letters to input on the website.

There's really nothing special with the online features aside from Nintendo giveaways, unless you want to battle/trade with others or participant in tournaments/ranked battles.

For the online tournaments, it's separated into age groups. I believe there's 3 divisions based on birth year. Anyone over 18 is lumped together in the Master division (I think that was what it called). So if she does battle, it would be in her age group, assuming that you input her real birthday on the website account. There is always prizes for participation but you have to complete a certain amount of battles. Lately, it has been pokemiles. But they don't sometimes give out rare berries.
