Hey guys, so I was thinking of buying a modded xbox 360 from some guy on Kijiji. (BTW, I am a major XBOX noob) But I had a couple of questions first. First of all what should I ask the guy, should I ask him what dashboard it is, is that important?

Also what is the difference between RGH and JTAG, should I ask him which one his is?

Basically, the guy himself just used to buy burned games from the flea market, but I was wondering if I just burned a game on a dvd and then inserted it in the xbox, would it work and appear as a normal xbox game or would I have to do something first.

Also, is there any way of playing the games on a usb or something because he wasn't sure.

- Thanks so much

It's not an RGH/JTAG. It's ixtreme firmware on dvd drive. Go read some tutorials on their website. They have a beginner guide.

It seems and like Relys also suspects, that it's a regular old flashed 360.

You'll have to patch EVERY game you obtain from the web with ABGX360 (I've made a nice tutorial about it here) and then burn it on a Verbatim DVD+R DL with a hacked iHAS drive or a drive compatible with the burner max payload tool (especially XGD3 games as they don't fit on normal DVD's)

If you dont use online then there is no need to patch all the dmi, pfi, ss, etc. Its only for online to make it more safer and then its not 100% safe using copies no matter what fw is flashed.

Yes still does matter.
Incomplete/missing topology data will let the 360 refuse to boot the game.
Not to mention that installing games to the HDD will fail on unpatched ISO's

Besides, it's only a few minutes of waiting every time so why not do it?

Only if you get an Xkey.
It's a little more expensive, but it allows you to play from an external HDD.

Or if you really don't care about multiplayer then go for a JTAG/RGH.
That allows you to boot games from the internal HDD.

I have an old phat banned console on old ixtreme that still boots all recent games. Only time i have to patch is for the video partitions

Pretty much all the recent games of today come with prepatched topology data.
Back then it was still new and we had per update challanges, it would prevent consoles from booting if it was missing.

I figured out that it's JTAG so can I play games on a usb. And is it easy to do patches? Thanks.

You absolutely sure it's a JTAG?
Did the guy told you you can load homebrew and emulators?

If so then the only thing you need to do is upgrade the internal HDD to a 500/1000 GB one.
Games can be extracted with Xbox Image browser and copied to the Harddisk with a USB or via FTP.

Yes.
It'll hold a few games.
A normal 360 game is roughly 6 GB.
So the 120 GB is filled up quickly.

Luckily, you can install any regular 2.5 inch HDD into the 360 when it's RGHd/JTAGged

Can I not just simply have about 5 games at a time and then delete them? Also will burned games work and would I have to patch them? Thanks again

You can ofcourse, no problem.
Burned games also work, but are inefficient when you can have everything on a harddisk.
USB harddisks also work, formatted to FAT32 ;]

Nope, patching isn't required.
