I've just purchased a used 3DS in great condition which still has the original pin code to redeem the stars for the console, does the warranty start when I redeem the star point and how can I check if I still have warranty?

A manufacturer's limited warranty is never dictated by date of registration of the hardware. It's always from the date of purchase. This applies to every electronics you purchase, new or used. Unless you received a purchase receipt with your used 3DS XL, you should assume it has no warranty. You always need proof of purchase to claim warranty, which depending on the store and sometimes the credit card you paid with, is 1 or 2 years from date of purchase. For some products the limited warranty is not transferable, though that doesn't apply to Nintendo products sold in the Americas and Europe as far as I know.
