Which web site hosting should I use?

I'm looking to get my website back up and running. I used godaddy in the past, but in recent years they have come under fire for a few different reasons. What other hosting service can you guys recommend for me? I don't have all the money in the world to waste on this, but I do want a service that is reliable. Thank you.

I usually suggest separating the hosting and the registrar.

Anyway what are your hosting requirements? Linux, Windows, MySQL, mongoDB, php. nginx....? What sort of bandwidth will you require? What amount of storage? Is the software running the site the kind of thing that will need good disc IO? What do you prefer to manage your site with (many a cheap and cheerful host will not allow ssh for instance, saying that you should be able to do everything from cpanel and what it has installed).

It mainly will just be to advertise my business. I may eventually allow purchasing of goods through the site or running wordpress. I doubt it will take in much traffic, maybe 3 visitors a year, if I am lucky. I would also like to be able to have multiple domains so I can have my deadlyfoez site, the modmii site, and maybe a couple other things, but this stuff is still kinda new to me even though I have been a pc tech for 10+ years. But I mostly just do custom builds and components repairs and game console repairs.

In my experience using ASP.Net, I'd recommend GoDaddy or 1and1. With Php, there's some good free ones, like AwardSpace.net and 000webhost.com. The domain name you probably won't find for free, just watch out, because many places advertise the cost for only the first year, when afterwards it can be a full $10 per year higher.

You can pay as much for hosting as you like really (though I have yet to find free hosting that is worth the effort). Unless I know I will need something else I tend to start on one of those 3 years, unlimited everything shared hosts that costs a few hundred dollars and migrate things around from there. modmii may be a different matter depending upon how popular the Wii remains. I am not sure which one I would suggest right now, they are all less than stellar but proper backups and you should be good, certainly good enough for some low traffic wiki and blog software to work.

Windows servers, depending upon the host, tend to come with ASP.net (Microsoft's answer to PHP really) which does have some benefits in speaking to domains (as in the "local" networking concept), active directory and other stuff. If your software runs on ASP.net* or you code in it then you might want it. Depending upon the hosting you buy said Windows server may also come with exchange email facilities. Likewise a windows server can run windows programs on it (ASP.net does kind of have an equivalent to CGI as part of it) so you can have your webpage call windows programs and go from there. If you really wanted you can also have a windows server run apache, php and mysql, however short of installing it yourself if you buy in your own virtual machine I do not think you will find such a thing to buy.
Being Windows you have to buy a license rather than just installing centos for Linux so it will cost you a little bit more if you have some kind of managed hosting, if you buy your own machine/VM then it is up to you if you install a mickey mouse version of windows server.

By and large you probably don't need a Windows server unless you actually know you do.

*it is actually quite a nice language (especially if you code in c#/normal .net family stuff), a fair bit of business software runs on it and all those other things I mentioned don't hurt. On the flip side most free but otherwise good blogs, cms software, wikis and other scripts of all forms tend to opt for the php + mysql approach to life.

I would recommend azure, if you are a small Company(or student) so can you apply for BizSpark and get 100 dollar free every month for azure(which is enough for 10+ webites and a virtual machine).
And yes Azure is 10x more expensive but also 10x better

And the rest of the shit is just complaining about hosting.. I've never had problems with them, albeit i only use them for my domain, i host out of my own house.

I don't know what you're quoting. I linked to Google. I was just pointing out the hundreds of thousands of people who have had bad experiences with GoDaddy. There are even several sites dedicated to how bad GoDaddy is.

Even if you set aside the hosting issues, they is still way too much controversy surrounding them.
