Hardware New 3DS -> why a 3DS Player for Wii U wasn't made before?

It's late, I'm bored, and I had a thought:

What if up until now Nintendo hasn't released a "3DS Player" because they still had the New 3DS in development? So with New 3DS and exclusives like Xenoblade Chronicles coming soon to the West, could it perhaps also mean there's the possibility of a 3DS Player still to come?

Of course, it could be a standalone unit like PS VitaTV and come in two packs, one with the Wii U GamePad and one without. Although that would require Nintendo to make a regular Wii U bundle without the GamePad and instead a Pro Controller, with maybe a $50 price reduction.

If I'm just dreaming, let me... I don't know if this is ever coming, but I'd sure as hell buy one if it came out.

I think nintendo is not doing this because of safety.
If hackers crack it they probably can use this to crack the 3ds, a big loss for N.

Because blowing up 400x240 to HD looks like poop.
Are 3ds / ds games not higher in resolution but does de 3ds/ds resize them?
I know wii games are better quality but they are "downsized".

But indeed, they would look *. (except if they use the Desmume trick/hack)

That's the native resolution. Wii games aren't "better quality than the Wii displays them" either - there's no reason to render at a higher resolution and scaling down, the games render at the native resolution. 3DS games are 2x400x240, Wii games have a variety of resolutions between 480p and 576i and DS games are 256x192.

Here a picture of the idea found on the web.

Really 480p (2x240) if you want to be fair.

That's not far off from the 544p of the native vita resolution that's blown up huge on the PSTV. Say nothing of blowing up PSP and PSX games mind you (the most redeeming value of the PSTV easily , citing its lackluster support of the lackluster vita library).

I don't see why Nintendo doesn't try this. It could even have a little extra power for multimedia stuff and simply run the 3ds in compatibility mode. Maybe use the extra power for decent filtering and anti-aliasing in 3ds mode. I think it could work.

I'm very fair - the console renders frames at 400x240 and the games are coded to work at that resolution. It doesn't matter how many pixels that is exactly, that's a fixed resolution. In 2D mode the only benefit is superior framerate since frames aren't used for the stereoscopy effect. The console can't do 480p because it wasn't designed to do so. ;)

And I'm wondering about that. Does New 3DS improve on rendered resolution vs. original 3DS. Output resolution is the same, but Nintendo talked about higher quality graphics for New 3DS games like Xenoblade Chronicles. Could these have a higher rendered resolution, scaled to the smaller resolution of the New 3DS displays to look better than games designed for the original 3DS?

Keep in mind there are even PS2 games technically capable of outputting 1080i, even though the PS2 was an SD console.

No, they'll be the same resolution, the system will just render more polygons and use higher resolution textures. Rendering at resolutions higher than the native one does not improve quality, it's actually worse.

You're probably right. It's still not far off from playing PS1 classics on a Vita TV, though. Resolution-wise we're talking about the same stuff, all the 3DS Player would need to do is have a smoothing filter enabled, maybe light scanlines. Would look plenty good. Actually, Dr Kawashima's Brain Training looks very good already and that's the simplest game there could be... lol

That's not how you calculate 3D resolution. 3DS correct resolution is 400 x 240, both 2D and 3D.

In 3D mode, 3DS generates two streams and let you see each stream at half vertical resolution. Your left and right eye each only sees 400 x 120.

When it comes to 3D, with the exception of active 3D display (3D glasses that requires battery/USB cable) and analygraph, all other 3D techniques will halve the vertical resolution.

DS didn't got a Wii Player...

Because it would be difficult or maybe even impossible for a DS to emulate Wii games due to them running on a more powerful engine than that of the DS. I believe it would also be next to impossible to emulate WiiU games on a 3DS/XL.
That's why the Wii had a DS player, (I think it did at least...) not the other way around like you mentioned.

GBA player wasn't emulation, it simply used the serial ports in the Gamecube but had all the hardware of the GBA, the DS/3DS player could do the same.

super gameboy and gameboy player used actual hardware to play the games, not emulation. Using the actual systems for input and video out.

Dont think nintendo exactly has plans to make a new one and spend that much money on a wii U accessory that could just lose them more money. I suppose usb could potentially work but something similar to the vita tv would make more sense while they're at it, that way removing the limitation of having to own a wii U. While it's a great system, not everyone things so.

But when it comes down to it, I think nintendo is just fine with 3ds games remaining a handheld experience.
