TechLand, the developer of the popular Dead Island series has just announced via Facebook that their newest game, Dying Light, will not be released on the Xbox 360 and the PS3 as previously announced. After rigorous testing the team has decided that last generation systems are simply not powerful enough to deliver the game in a way they have originally envisioned and as such, Dying Light will only be released on the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Here is what TechLand had to say:
TechLand said:
Dear Gamers,

As you probably know, we’re wrapping up the development of Dying Light, our biggest and most ambitious project to date. We spent the last three years making sure that all the features of our game add up to create a truly next-gen experience.

Much of this “next-gen feel” is tightly connected to the technological side of Dying Light. For instance, up to 200,000 objects can be displayed in the game at once. Add to this our use of realistic, physics-based lighting technology and you really start to push the next-gen systems to the limits. Features like these along with our core gameplay pillars – such as the player-empowering Natural Movement, threefold character development system, and vast open world – are all an inherent part of how Dying Light plays. However, combining all of these into one fluid experience is only possible on technologically advanced platforms.

Therefore, after thorough internal testing, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to leave past-gen systems behind and release Dying Light exclusively on the next-gen consoles and PC. Put simply, older consoles just couldn’t run the game and stay true to the core vision of Dying Light at the same time.

To ensure you enjoy Dying Light as much as we would like you to, we chose to release it without any compromises on the three strongest systems available. Thanks to this, you’ll get the full and best experience regardless of the platform you play on.

We hope you understand the hard choice we’ve had to make. With the launch just around the corner, we can’t wait to show you Dying Light in the state it was meant to be. We’re looking forward to your reactions and impressions as we release the game in January 2015.
The moment everyone's been waiting for has finally happened - developers are moving away from systems of the past and look forward to the greener pastures for current gen ones. Here's for hoping that the game is truly excellent and benefits from the additional horsepower offered by current gen consoles - the grace period is over, it's time to kick this generation off with a bang!

I'm not surprised. This was bound to start happening eventually, that last gen hardware just wouldn't make the cut even with concessions. At this point, PS3 and 360 versions of games are just released so that those unable to transition yet can take part still. With this gen having been in full swing for almost a full year now though, it was to be expected that games would start being developed that simply wouldn't down port well.

We're getting close to the point where you'll have to jump into this generation or start falling behind.

Or instead of calling it "left behind" users can enjoy all the vast and good games the PS3 and the 360 offered throughout its lifespan.
Because there certainly aren't thousands upon thousands of people that kept up during the generation and have no need to play around with old releases anymore unless they want a second romp through a game they've already beaten. Oh wait. I forgot that it was only a minority of gamers who actually desire to stay behind. Plenty of people have the budget necessary to keep up on the current gen, as can be displayed by the 12m+ PS4 sales in less than a year without even having any must have content.

Wii U is comparable to PS3/X360 in overall performance. It has larger RAM (main thing that holds PS3/X360 down) and faster GPU, but weaker CPU.

Overall, comparable, not much powerful.
The "weaker CPU" part is hightly debatable, I'd argue that the CPU is stronger or at the very least on-par with the 360's and the PS3's and overall the system is more powerful than the PS3 and the 360, easily and without a doubt. That's still a long shot from the PS4 and the Xbox One, but hey.

thats a pretty broad and stereotypical statement to say there. Not everyone has the money to keep up with the "next big thing" and sales are just units sold. The numbers don't actually say which users actually had the money or funds. There are also other means to purchase high end products without lack of funds. Like credit cards or store credit cards. Hell I could own a PS4 today with a Best Buy credit card, even though I don't have the "budget." Would that reflect as a sale? Yes. Do I actually have the budget to afford one? nope.

That's been debunked. Plenty of people and companies have stated that the CPU is in fact, more powerful than the Xbox 360 and PS3 CPUs, the problem is that it likely isn't powerful enough for this developer and with a different architecture, GPGPU, it ain't gonna be easy.
