America, you're not doing quite so bad after all! Nintendo recently announced some preliminary sales figures of the latest hit title on the Nintendo 3DS, Super Smash Bros. 3DS. Feel free to read my Official GBAtemp Review. For two days of sales in North America, grabbing 705,000 copies looks pretty solid. 135,000 were sold on the eShop. It also drove hardware sales up by 55%, moving 130,000 3DS units back in September. With the holidays coming up, these numbers are sure to increase, and with Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire on the horizon, Nintendo's got quite a holiday season coming up. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS Sells 705,000 Units in Two Days, Drives 55 Percent Increase in Hardware Sales

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS launched on Oct. 3 in the U.S., and even with only two days of data included in NPD’s September report, the game still managed to finish as the No. 4 best-selling software SKU for the month with more than 705,000 total units sold. Of that total, more than 135,000 units were sold digitally through the Nintendo eShop. The game’s biggest impact however may be on hardware sales. More than 140,000 units of the Nintendo 3DS family of systems were sold in September, an increase of 55 percent over sales in August.

Sales of Wii U hardware also saw double-digit increases in September, increasing by nearly 50 percent over sales in August. These gains were driven in particular by two software titles: Hyrule Warriors and Mario Kart 8. Hyrule Warriors launched on Sept. 26 and has already sold more than 190,000 combined units in the U.S. alone. Mario Kart 8 sold nearly 60,000 combined units in its fifth month on the market, bringing its lifetime total in the U.S. to nearly 1.2 million total units.

A great lineup of games for Wii U begins on Oct. 26 with Bayonetta 2, the Wii U exclusive that currently holds a 91 score on Metacritic. That continues with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on Nov. 21 and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on Dec. 5. Also launching on Nov. 21 is amiibo, Nintendo’s foray into the toys-to-life category. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be the first game to launch with amiibo integration. Other games that will support amiibo include Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10 and Yoshi’s Woolly World, with more to come. More details about compatibility and functionality of amiibo may be found at http://amiibo.com.

The Nintendo 3DS library will soon be bolstered by two of the most anticipated games of 2014: Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire (Nov. 21).

Nintendo is finished. Please understand. They need to go mobile!

Also no the 3ds will be years away from becoming obsolete when the new 3ds comes around! Just saying

This was sort of expected because Super Smash Bros. on the go is an awesome idea and until the Wii U version is released it's OK.

I bought the game, played the game for more than 20hrs, registered the Club Nintendo card, kept those two cards and traded it in for a Wii U game (DK:TF). I wasn't going to play SSB-3DS when the Wii U edition would be out and saw that DK:TF had the same value so I went for it.

I thought a long time ago, we decided sales figures weren't news, at least not overly relevant news for this site. Maybe times have changed. I digress.

Is anybody actually surprised though? We all know Nintendo games sell well on Nintendo consoles. It's not all that uncommon for the biggest of them to sell over a million copies, usually dwarfing third party sales figures on Nintendo consoles and confirming why they don't want to come within 10 feet of the Wii U or 3DS. Especially where Smash Bros is concerned, we only get one per generation, only since the N64, and this is the first time that one has gone mobile, opening up to all of those who aren't interested in the home consoles. All in all, I would be surprised if the game wasn't selling stupidly well.

Needs to go mobile? Terrible idea. Who in their right mind would want to play a game like this on a fucking touchscreen.

I had an iPhone which I sold off but before that I'd play some zombie FPS game and I could never have any god damn accuracy with it.

Either a physical controller or I won't play it.

Or they could just not and just start pushing more 3rd party games for their systems.

Plus mobile is a horrible idea and most likely cost them more money. They would either have to make their own OS, which could come with some hit n' miss results or use Android, which could put their games on other phones or leave it open to be hacked.
Plus touchscreen controls still suck.

Imagine playing those special Mario 3D World stages which require absolute precision and timing with a touchscreen controller...

Mario Kart 8 sold 1.2 million in the first few days, why cant SSB for the U do the same thing?

Well, because, Guild deemed it so, amirite? :creep:
Because he hates Nintendo and has what the Germans called schadenfreude, the pleasure of seeing others' suffering.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
