One of the biggest titles of 2014 has finally been released for the Nintendo 3DS, and it's selling like hotcakes all over the world, having sold over 2.8 million copies at this point. Nintendo of America was kind enough to provide GBAtemp with a review copy of the game, reviewed by none other than Ryukouki! Find out what he thought about the title in the latest Official GBAtemp Review!

Good review. I think it ranks a little higher though.

There's a reason why I absolutely hate the numbering system of reviews. :P They're too subjective, and that's all that people will really see. A lot of people (not saying you!) just look at the number and if it doesn't suit their opinion it's automatically a bad review - for me, the material is what really should matter. ;)

Then why bother with numbers? Just give a short list of pros/cons and a summary, maybe whether you think the game is worth purchasing, that should suffice :P
(I do agree that numbers are completely arbitrary though)

I'm required to place a numerical value with the review center.

Quick question. I dont mean to be nit picky but when you said in your opening that you received a review copy is that like a demo with a bit more features than one found in the eShop or is that a regular copy that can be purchased in retail stores?

Just curious, thank you.

Full retail copy. It's not a demo.

Review copies are usually just full retail games, sometimes given a bit before the release date (which means they may have a few additional bugs in some cases) given to someone for free as long as they review it.
Edit: of course you need to be a somewhat proper reviewer to actually get these

Definitely took a good amount of back and forth between myself and the Nintendo rep to get this title, thankfully we were able to get our hands on one. As far as getting games early, it depends on how early the media department gets their hands on codes - I've played games that weren't due for release like a month in advance.

I'm surprised with the reputation this site has that they would give you a copy. I'm not saying you as a person are a bad human being but to represent this website surprises me that they weren't skeptic to hand you a copy.

Otherwise congratz and I hope you fully enjoy it.

I'm glad that they were able to work beyond that. I'm sure they're aware of our presence, but I definitely was able to show them that we're more than a piracy site and moving in the direction of legitimate video game coverage.

It's an enjoyable title, and deserves every dollar that it gets, but it's not quite perfect.

Anyone else find it humorous that Nintendo would agree to hand over a game to a reviewer who frequents a site that is aimed toward informing people on how to breach the security in their systems, so that it can be reviewed to a great number of people who have already obtained and played it through illegal means? :D

Wait till you guys see next month. :) You guys are not the only ones in shock. An indie game, fine. A big blockbuster title? Definitely nice to be recognized enough to review it.

The mere fact that you said "And they sound incredible." tells me you're not ready to review this game.

It sounds as flat as a shitty 64kb/s audio file. There's no way they sound incredible, it's below average sadly because the soundtrack itself is spectacular.

I do hope that the audio quality on the newer 3DS that's coming out is at least 192kb/s.

My daughter was looking forward for this game until she got the demo and hated it. So we saved our money and got something a lot better.
I had a go and also thought it was crap. Glad there was a demo so we didn't waste our money.
If Nintendo think this will save the 3DS they are wrong. They have to make new, better games not release the same few games over and over.

Tell that to the 1.2 million copies sold in Japan, alone.

I'm not saying you're wrong to dislike it or anything, but it's kind of silly to say that it won't "save" the 3DS (does the 3DS even really need to be saved at this point?) when it's clearly been a huge commercial success.

That would be like saying that CoD won't "save" Activision even though it sells millions upon millions every year. Just because it's not good doesn't mean it's not commercially successful.
