Hello everyone!

I have been playing a bit with nintendont lately, since I wanted to play my old Baten Kaitos, Skies of Arcadia and Zelda Collector on the gamepad screen. Everything is working really nicely, I am amazed by the great work they did on putting back GC compatibility on the vWii

There is just one thing which bother me a bit : the games are always in 16:9 on the tv and gamepad. It is not a big issue, but the games look weird when all stretched like that... :(

Of course on the TV I can just change the mode to put it in 4:3 easily, but not on the gamepad.
I know a such option might reduce the image quality, as the two black bar would probably have to be inserted in the ouput image.
But does someone know how to do that anyway?

Thank you very much :D

The gamepad is a literal mirror of the TV output. Change one and you change the other. I know there was a fix for the homebrew channel when it broke and displayed in 4:3 instead of 16:9 but IDK if the same thing could be done backwards (it basically rebooted it to not be a "virtual console" channel)

It's an issue that we've pointed out before, to be honest. Nintendont outputs the image as 'full screen', which usually translates into 16:9 when using a HD resolution over HDMI. The developers advise people to force 4:3 on their TV, which unfortunately doesn't really help with the Gamepad (or people like me with no way to force 4:3 on their TV).

what DOES help is running the Homebrew Channel via it's channel vs a forwarder as the channel itself runs as 4:3 because of the changes Nintendo did in 4.0. by running Nintendon't this way, games will run 4:3 even on the gamepad.

No, this doesn't help. Nintendon't will just switch back to fullscreen (16:9) output during the initialization sequence.

Yeah I tried asking for help in the sticky too but no dice both times I asked. It's something that bothers me too but I don't want to request it anymore after some drama went down.

It's not that the people in the main Nintendont thread don't reply back, it's just that there is actually no solution for this, so no one replies with a straight answer.
So far, there is no way to make Nintendont output in 4:3, as far as I know neither does Devo (correct me if I'm wrong).

My guess is that the screen output is hard coded in to the app itself, if you either have the Widescreen hack on or off, it doesn't matter, the image stretches itself to fit the screen, so you won't be able to output 4:3 unless you play it in an old TV with composite cables.

Although, if I am allowed, my opinion on this is that we should either live with it.
Gamecube games do not look bad at all when stretched a little bit, it's not like we are playing NES or GB games, in which the stretching is far more noticeable.
That's my own thought, thou.

Hope this helps :)

Devolution actually keeps things in 4:3 if you open it through the 4:3 Homebrew Channel, but as mentioned above, Nintendont automatically goes back to 16:9 even if you open it through the 4:3 Homebrew Channel. Don't really know the reason for these, just throwing it out there.

Actually, after its recent update not too long ago, Devolution does the same thing now, unfortunately. :(

Of course, if nothing can be done about it without great effort, then that's fair enough. I would agree that compatibility is the priority, and the devs should prioritise what they want to work on.

I would says though that plenty of games have no widescreen support even when forced. In particular, Resident Evil Remake, Zero, 2 and 3 look particularly bad due to using pre-rendered backgrounds.

They do look bad, but even when stretched, the model polygons still look good, even 2 & 3 ones.

Thanks for the information ShadowOne333, Indeed in most games it it is ok with the stretch.
But as sj33 said, in some other games it looks really bad :(

Maybe I am saying something stupid, but isn't there a way to reproduce the HBC bug and put it as an nintendont startup option? This bug comes from the fact the channel is seen as a virtual console channel right?
Or would it possible to do a downscaling of the pixel width by 33% and add black bars to the global output signal? This solution will make the quality sligthly worse on the TV, but it could still be ok on the gamepad.
The downscaling might also take a bit of power for processing, but can't we use the wii mode extra power for that? :P

Yeah it still works with r200 which has great compatibility. I think the recent updates have just addressed certain controller or analogue trigger issues.

Until we get controls mapped to the gamepad it doesn't interest me........GC and Wii look great on gamepad but it just isn't practical to hold a separate controller
