Yeh that thing will work fine.
However, do you got a compatible SATA chipset?
As you still need to flash yer drive with a 0800 firmware (if it isn't preflashed) and XBC has to detect it as well.

I suggest searching for a Xbox USB Pro V2.
This is a connectivity kit (power to the drive) and SATA in one.

Thanks for the reply, and cool!

Yes i have a compatible SATA chipset
No, the drive is already flashed and set up, i used it a few times already, but my brother moved out and i was using his xbox power(he had his system open)

and i also found this and was told this would be a lot easier set up: http://www.modchipcentral.com/store/product.php?productid=17668&cat=&page=1

Aye neat.

Humm, you got a normal desktop PC?
Then it's easier to just plug it into a lose Molex, instead of spending money on that.
Anyway, you're free to get it tho.

Only thing you need is a CK3i connectivity kit to power the drive ;]

What exactly is the problem with using the Xbox to power the drive while flashing it?

I'm completely new to this but I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to flash my phat Xbox's BenQ drive. Also I'm using a laptop. How much do you think the materials could cost (USA) assuming I have none of them already. I may just end up paying someone else to do it but my friend who is willing to do it says that when he hacked his, he had the disc drive powered by his 360. Apparently he was never banned (though his disc drive is broken now for some reason).

It's annoying.
Not only to mention that the 360 could power off during flashing, rendering your drive inoperable.

You must invest in a X360 USB pro, those are atleast 30 quid
I'd say pay the mate of yours.
It's easier as he already did it, so you can't mess it up.

The thing is he used his 360 to power the drive. He never even heard of the USB pro. I think he just connected his HDD to his PC with sata cables and had it powered with his 360. These seem like red flags to me but I'm not entirely sure. Do people actually get banned because of this?

And assuming it didn't matter, is it possible to hack it with nothing more than the software and cable to connect the HDD to PC?

Edit: I guess what I want to know is what is the bare minimum (and cheapest) materials I need to flash it play backups. Benq drive for a phat arcade console.

Nope.
It does trigger a NO_DVD flag but it's not bannable by MS.

Yes.
However, you don't connect your HDD to yer PC, you connect the DVD drive.

Since you got a laptop, you'll need an X360 USB pro v1.
That's the bare minimum you need.

Oh so they don't ban for that? That's a good sign. I won't be very upset either way.

Yikes that looks a little expensive. I can't find the v1 but the v2 is like 70 bones.

I'll just post my transcript with my friend. Does it seem like he knows what he's doing?

[9/25/2014 6:20:04 PM] Ericzander: So yours plays backups and stuff online? You still have the materials? I could pay you to do it. Later today I'm getting one from craigslist.
[9/25/2014 6:20:29 PM] Him: I'd have to set up some of the BIOS things I
[9/25/2014 6:20:38 PM] Him: I'd need*
[9/25/2014 6:20:48 PM] Him: But yeah, I can do it for ya, just lemme know when
[9/25/2014 6:21:08 PM] Ericzander: Yeah it wouldn't be right away anyway. I'm still at school. I just wanted to know if you had the materials. Because don't you need special equipment?
[9/25/2014 6:21:30 PM] Him: Just a desktop with some open sata ports
[9/25/2014 6:28:17 PM] Ericzander: Oh also, do you have the equipment to burn 360 games too?
[9/25/2014 6:28:25 PM] Ericzander: Probably since it's just a disc drive
[9/25/2014 6:29:31 PM] Him: I have a drive that supports blu-ray burning
[9/25/2014 6:29:43 PM] Him: I think it can handle dual layer dvds
[9/25/2014 6:29:45 PM] Him: Lol
[9/25/2014 6:30:05 PM] Ericzander: loool. So that's what you've been doing with your 360 games right?
[9/25/2014 6:30:23 PM] Him: Nahg
[9/25/2014 6:30:30 PM] Him: I didn't feel like re-modding
[9/25/2014 6:30:40 PM] Him: And couldn't find the dual layer disks
[9/25/2014 6:30:50 PM] Him: Plus my drive finally crapped out on me
[9/25/2014 6:31:08 PM] Ericzander: So you don't play it at all?
[9/25/2014 6:31:22 PM] Him: I can still get games off of the marketplace
[9/25/2014 6:31:32 PM] Him: And play them from the hard drive
[9/25/2014 6:32:00 PM] Ericzander: ahh. i trust you won't break mine lol. i'm getting it in a little bit. only 35. I hope it works lol
[9/25/2014 6:32:15 PM] Him: Mine only crapped out cuz it was first gen
[9/25/2014 6:33:04 PM] Ericzander: So you think that all you'll need is a sata drive? Do you have something to power it? I'm really clueless lol
[9/25/2014 6:33:17 PM] Him: There's a tool for modding it
[9/25/2014 6:33:37 PM] Him: Just have to have the drive's sata cable connected to the computer that you
[9/25/2014 6:33:41 PM] Him: *You're using to mod it
[9/25/2014 6:33:49 PM] Him: Why does ' have to be next to enter?
[9/25/2014 6:34:05 PM] Ericzander: lol. Using Jungleflasher right?
[9/25/2014 6:34:16 PM] Him: never heard of it
[9/25/2014 6:35:26 PM] Ericzander: Oh wow. Maybe it has been a while. The guide I'm looking at says "First things first you'll need to get a X360USBPro and a CK3i or a X360 USBPro v2 + a Probe 3 for connecting the drive to the Powersource.
(VIA SATA cards also work as well as some SATA chipsets but for the sake of simplicity I'll go with the above)"

*Later on*
[9/25/2014 7:26:10 PM] Ericzander: If you have the time it looks like this video explains how to do it. Do you have the parts needed?
[9/25/2014 7:26:59 PM] Him: You don't need that thing he has powering it
[9/25/2014 7:27:06 PM] Him: Just need to use the Xbox for power
[9/25/2014 7:29:49 PM] Ericzander: But the guides say that that can get you banned. A big red flag
[9/25/2014 7:30:17 PM] Him: Just do it offline, lol
[9/25/2014 7:30:28 PM] Him: And the disk drive isnt' connected to the system for data
[9/25/2014 7:30:29 PM] Him: Just the PC
[9/25/2014 7:31:08 PM] Ericzander: From what I understand is that even if you're offline, once you go online the flag will be sent
[9/25/2014 8:11:54 PM] Ericzander: so you had your disc drive powered by the 360 while flashing it?
[9/25/2014 8:12:09 PM] Him: yeah
[9/25/2014 8:12:54 PM] Ericzander: And that's basically the only difference? You didn't get banned?
[9/25/2014 8:13:01 PM] Him: Yup

Seems like he's just some fella that found a guide and did it once.
Powering the drive via the xbox works but it's tedious.
I've flashed 100's of drives, I can't be arsed using the 360 to power them.

Only things you can get banned for these days is having unpatched backups.
As well as openly admitting piracy and ofcourse cheating online, yes that includes using GTA mods.

I hope he flashes the drive for you.
He seems like some lazy fuck that just cba to do it for his mates.

Well I hacked his wii for free (granted that was much easier) so he probably won't charge me for it anyway.

And if you're only doing it to one console as opposed to hundreds like you did, would it still warrant the extra cost of getting the extra materials?

On an semi-related note I saw the sticky where you offered to flash xboxes for europeans for free (very cool of you btw) do you know anyone around the forums that would do it for americans? Thanks for answering my ignorant questions.

Yes.
As it's a fuck ton easier to power it with dedicated flashing gear then to spend effort, getting it to load in Jungleflasher.
I can strip down a 360 to it's mobo in under 5 minutes.
Key extraction and flashing I can do within 2 and reassembly is also under 5 minutes.
In total, per 360, I spend less then 10 minutes as opposed to an hour orso using the 360 ;p

Devin used to do it, but as of now, I got no idea.

Well that's a bummer. Since he would be using his desktop which does have the sata port (and according the the transcript he already has the cables), he would still need the X360 USB pro? I'm only asking because you said that I would need it since I had a laptop. Would he still need it?

Nope.
X360 USB pro is only for connecting the SATA port of the DVD to the PC.

Laptops mostly have incompatible SATA chipsets so a X360 USB is required.

Oh so he's basically good? Got all the stuff he needs? Just maybe wanna invest in the CK3i? Or would the DVD Drive Power Dongle that the OP linked work instead? What do you suggest as the cheapest way to get it done aside from powering it with the console. Hopefully these are my last questions I just wanna make sure I understand the situation.

If you want to do it yourself and have no desktop PC, an X360 USB Pro v2 and an external Molex powersupply is needed if you don't want to power it with the 360.
If you do want to power it with the 360, then an X360 USB Pro v1 would be sufficient.

Oh I mean for him to do it who does have the desktop PC. I think he'll do it for free. Or at least let me use his PC to do it myself.
