I'm debating on getting a PSP 1000 with the hope of using it to play PS1 roms (or Eboots, as i hear they are called) on it, but do you have to hack the PSP to play PS1 games that you download?

I'm asking because a hacked PSP costs way more than a non-hacked one.

It needs to be hacked ,but you should just buy the non hacked one. Hacking a psp is as simple as copying a couple of files to the memory card & running a program in you psp. Should take you 10 min or less to do the whole thing & its pretty safe ,so I don't see any reason why you should pay more for a hacked psp.

Dude... Why are you paying for a hacked PSP. Just get a regular PSP and hack it yourself. Its so easy. And ps1 games I'm not sure if you need to be hacked to play them. I would imagine you need to have a hacked one tho

You need a hacked PSP to play PS1 games.
I recommend using Pro-C 6.60 or LME 6.60. They're both light firmwares, meaning you can switch between OFW and CFW modes using a loader.

There are several tutorials for hacking the PSP, which is literally using a USB cable and transferring files to a specified location and running them. PSP hacking is the easiest hack to do now. Once you update to 6.60, you never have to update again. 6.60 supports all PSP ISOs, even Japan's newest games.

PS1 is another matter altogether. Each firmware has different compatibilities with PS1 game.
PS1 Eboots can be played on the PSP using PopsLoader to switch between different firmware's PS1 compatibility(known as POPs)
As for Eboots, Google is your friend if you give it specific terms to search with.

For those who prefer to use separate folders to separate their fighting games from puzzle games, or their RPGs from platformers, there is only one firmware option:

5.00m33-6

For this you will need the Game Categories plugin and a hackable PSP.

Sony gimped the 6.xx series firmware by reducing the total characters that can be used for directory structure and also removed the charming background preview images that are used for both PSP and PS1 games. With 6.xx, you'll find that you run out of characters to properly name all of your folders.

Using category folders is recommended for emulators too, but on the PSP it has the added benefit of speeding up the process of finding the game you want to play. That's due to the fact that the PSP's interface is laggy and doesn't automatically highlight the last game played.

When setup properly, there's no notable compatibility difference between 5.00 and 6.xx.

What?

I use Game Categories perfectly fine on 6.60? Also no issues with background images either.

Game Cat is a fantastic plugin dont get me wrong, I use it, but it works for all firmwares to the best of my knowledge. certainly does for the PRO C ones 6.20 and 6.60 anyway.

Perhaps the newest releases fixed the character path limitation.

Can you create a folder named "CAT_(PS1) Action - Platformer" and browse/load any game within that folder?

From older Game Categories documentation:

"Something to keep in mind are length limits. Category names have a limit of 18 characters (excluding the CAT_ prefix), and the full path to the file can't exceed a certainth number of characters due to Sony limits. If corrupt icons start to show up, you might want to try renaming the folders to shorter names."

More characters would only be possible if Sony removed their 6.xx firmware limitations. If the limitation is truly removed, then I'd recommend 6.60 also. But not for me personally. I prefer the background previews to an empty screen.

Well I've obviously not tried that specifically, but I do have all these and they work flawlessly

CAT_PSP Games A to E
CAT_PSP Games F to L
CAT_PSP Games M to R
CAT_PSP Games S to Z
CAT_PSP Minis
CAT_PSP Homebrew - Apps - Emulation
CAT_Playstation One Games

Just to be sure as well as Im interested in the issue i also added a load of random stuff to the end of one CAT and it still worked, displayed (scrolling text if too long) and read and played fine anything from that folder.

If a folder that long is working for you, then it looks like the 18 character limitation is no longer a problem for 6.xx. Also, did I read correctly that you can only have a total of 8 categories in GCL 1.6? Since I split games up based on system\genre, that wouldn't work for me.

Just added two other random cat folders and shoved an ISO in each and both work fine. So thats 9 folders. There might well be a limit somewhere on it, but its not 8.
