As I said above, what's the actual drive speed? I heard that it's a 6x drive obviously the wii seems to be using(and in many cases _is_ using) a dvd drive so then that means that it's using a 6x dvd drive and thus when looking at a flash drive to use for backing up my retail games I should make sure the read speed is at minimum ~64Mb/s or ~8MB/s to stay at the same speed of the drive in best case scenarios?

if i'm right, i think the actual read speed on softmod mode is limited to 3x.
I was talking about the disc drive in it's own "normal" mode for the max speed. Since I see no reason why backups couldn't run at full 6x speed since USB2.0 is now fully supported which gives you actual semi-decent performance from the thing. and I was talking about the speed in terms of MB/s

and I'm sure taht the loaders have gotten a ton better than they used to be.

So I was trying to make sure that it's 6x DVD speed is what the unit that everyone's using since it should be as the GC had a 2x minidvd drive in it.

You totally don't need to do this, games run better at USB 2.0 speed, there's no need to slow it down unless you want to purposely imitate the drive speed or if there's some obscure game out there that needs the lower reading which is unlikely.

Cool thing though is Devolution had recently added an option that lets you do this, but is clearly for nostalgic reasons and not compatibility reasons, and Gamecube games in devo have in most cases instant loading times so this feature helps if you want to see loading screens more or something.

I was talking about being able to have a flash drive that was _fast_ enough. Not to slow it down, I was just making sure where my points of interest were so that way I didn't get a flash drive that was way too slow and made everything run like crap.

Edit: I accidently didn't word it right. Since I meant to say it had to be at least that fast(in terms of the wii's best case perf is that) so that way my flash drive works AOK/just fine.

P.S. I'm not going to be using a USBHDD as I don't want to have more and more spinning stuff going on.

I am probably going to have to use devolution to use the whole backing up my memory cards thing once I get them out of the top of my closet.

I know it's a 6x drive but I was making sure that it's using the DVD standard for read speed.

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
You should update the 360 to newest dash before RGHing it yes. But not a big deal if you don't, you can install new dash/avatar updates after. It's just easier to do it auto online before, instead manual offline after.
