Good Afternoon All,
So I have been using my Buffalo 1TB hard drive for a fair few years now without any issues. I recently plugged the wii in after a long hiatus.

The hard drive has been recognised without an issue for ages (formatted to FAT 32, used on the 'bottom' / 'right' port).

I had not used the wii for a while (a couple of years) and plugged it in a few months ago and it has been working until this weekend. I then read that you can now load GC backups off the hard drive and attempted (operative word here) to follow this tutorial:

http://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-play-gamecube-games-off-a-usb-hdd.329628/

After following the tutorial the games on my hard drive are not recognised. The drive itself shows up in the settings of USB Loader GX.

I have attempted the following:

1. Updating USB Loader GX to the latest version.
2. Trying different ports when setting the USB port to '0', '1' and 'both'.
3. Updating the cIOSs for 249 (base 56) and 250 (base 57) using dx2 installer.
4. As above, using versions 6 through to 10 of dx2.
5. Changing the IOS in USB Loader GX to 249, 250 and 222 (same result on all three; hard drive is detected but no games visible).
6. I have tried USB Loader CFG (for normal USB Loader) I get an error that states something along the lines of "Partition: Auto failed". It then says select partition (which is shown as the first option on the list "#1: 936GB") It says press A to select but this does nothing.
7. I've also tried modding the wii from scratch using ModMii but the issue still prevails.

Looking into it I believe it's an issue with my cIOSs (I've clearly ballsed something up here).

I will post a SysCheck when I get home tonight.

Anyone got some suggestions of what I could try to resolve the issue?

Thanks in advanced,

Knotty.

your syscheck version is old.
Use syscheck HDE instead.

Update your cIOS from v6 to at least v8

if d2x cIOS v8 doesn't work, try v10, then if it doesn't work, try v10-alt

edit:
After re-reading I see you already tried these version.
v8 is recommended. v6 is too old and doesn't have all features (like IOS reload block)

so,
1. update cIOS to v8
2. reinstall USBLoaderGX (or update it and meta.xml, and delete the settings)

Also, you followed an old, not good, incomplete, not updated guide to play gamecube games.
It's explaining only one method (the older one), while there are 3 possible.
There are also Devolution or Nintendont as possible method.
If you really want DIOS MIOS or DIOS MIOS Lite, there are other guides which explains better.

thanks for the new one, it looks complete now.
everything seems fine to me, for Wii games at least.

If you followed the guide, You probably missed a step where you had to install a wad (DIOS MIOS or DIOS MIOS Lite).
the syscheck tells you currently have MIOS v10 (the official Gamecube mode of nintendo).
By following the guide, you should have DIOS MIOS v2.8 instead.
But 2.8 is old, soon 2.12 will be released.

If you want to play gamecube, there are three methods :

1. replacing MIOS (install a wad, you can have only one MIOS at a time so installing one will replace the previous one). Good compatibility
2. Devolution (require Disc verification with a gamecube compatible Wii). Near perfect compatibility. There's no installation (it's a file to put on SD or USB).
3. Nintendont. Currently in development, good compatibility. no installation (copy a file to SD or USB)

All three methods can be "installed" at the same time, and you pick the one you want in USBLoaderGX after placing all the required files in the correct locations.

You said your HDD is correctly recognized, the issue is the game not found.
All the games, or only Gamecube?

Did you enable Gamecube display ? (4th icon in the top menu)
Where did you copy your games?
it should be:
/games/whatever you want/game.iso

The file NEED to be named "game.iso" ... The 4 letters ! G + A + M + E
NOT the game's title.
Zelda.iso <-- wrong
game.iso <-- good

Thanks for the quick response.

I've got the naming convention as above. It's both the Wii games and GC. No games show that did before. They can be seen as normal on the PC.

I'm not too worried about the GC games at the moment just trying to get my Wii to recognise the games that it did before on the HD.

Looking at "Hard Drive Settings" it clearly shows the hard drive under:

'Game/Install Partition' is shows 'FAT32 (931.51GB)'

All settings are down as set to default (reinstalled from https://code.google.com/p/usbloader-gui/downloads/list).

Try deleting the config file of your USB loader - it should be on the SD card. Upon rebooting the loader, it will create a new config file with default settings.

the wii games are in the correct format too?

/wbfs/Game title [GameID]/GameID.wbfs

The loader is compatible with different path layout, but not all.
The one above is known working.

I think the one not working is either
/wbfs/GameID.wbfs
or
/wbfs/gameID/GameID.wbfs
or maybe another one, I don't remember.

Renaming the games and putting them in the right folders by hand is for "busy idiots", really - there's a slew of backup managers that'll do everything for you, convert to .wbfs and scrub the ISO's on-the-fly. I personally recommend Wii Backup Manager - it's fool-proof and has served me for many years now. Why introduce the possibility of user error when you can automate the process?

Yup =/ (used to work fine with USB Loader GX)

Just tried version 2.0 and it came up with "No wbfs / fat 32 partition found" I clicked "Select Partition" and chose the 931GB partition and nothing...

I've got another non-modded Wii and a small USB pen drive, I will mod the other Wii and see if the drive works with that and test the pen drive with this one over the weekend. This is really odd...

I didn't tell him to do it manually, but to "check" is the program he used properly put the file in the correct folder.
He only has to check his drive to see if the path is good.

I agree that the best is using Wii backup manager, but with the correct setting (not the default one!)

Go to option > FAT32 & NTFS
put games in subfolder : yes
Naming convention : Game_[ID] <--- this one is important
Auto-rename existing game path at partition mount : Yes

My best recommendation would be to salvage all your .wbfs files, format the drive to FAT32, make sure that the partition is Primary and start from scratch. If all else fails, reinstall cIOS d2x using the recommended settings.

Never had any issues with the bog standard settings, but whatever you say. :P

I have actually used WiiBackUpManager on this hard drive. I think I might follow that sugestion, does USB Loader GX have an option to format, might be a better way to tackle this, then put them back on.

I just know one of the setting is wrong, but I never remember which one.
I should really add it to the loader to be safe.

Don't format yet.
Check the naming convention I told first.

To format, you can use WiiBackupManager too, or FAT32Format.

The loader is compatible with :
MBR, GPT partiton table type
Primary, extended, Logical partition type
Active or inactive
WBFS, FAT32, NTFS, Ext2, Ext3, Ext4 read only

The best format is FAT32 with 32k/cluster, primary, single partition (don't make multiple partition)

You should format the drive on a PC, otherwise you won't be able to properly check the volume's options and whether or not it's set to Primary. Half-assed solutions give half-assed results - do it right. ;)

The drive was originally formatted with FAT32Format with 32k clusters (on the PC).
As I am having problems now just thought I'd ask if it could be done natively on the wii as I have already done it properly I thought it might be worth seeing the other options as the hard drive is still not being recognised.

I honestly think it must be something else, as I said it was working fine for ages (even when I used it years ago).
I used to have it formatted to WBFS (years ago) then when I came back to using the Wii a few months ago I formatted to FAT32 on the PC. This was working fine till I attempted that tutorial I mentioned in the first post. I clearly ballsed something up on the Wii side of things as the hard drive itself hasn't changed at all.

I will format again and put the games back on to see if it helps but I don't think it will, we'll see.

Knotty.

Update:

So I got in from work and thought I'd just try a pen drive with a game of mine, used USB Loader GX to copy the game from my disk to the drive. Installed fine, it was seen and booted up fine. Leads me to think it's something up with the hard drive.

I'm currently in the process of backing up all the games onto another drive then I'll format again and place them back on. I'll update this post just in case someone else comes to the same issue in the future and doesn't think about trying this. Hopeful this will resolve the issue.

You mentioned that FAT32 would be the best option, if USB Loader GX can read NTFS what's the benefit of using FAT32?

Knotty.

Just an update:

Backed up all my games, reformatted the drive, did a syscheck and put everything back on it and now the wii picks it up no problem.

With the latest version of USB Loader GX and Dios Mios 2.11 I'm also accessing my GC backups.

Just a side note, I tried Nintendont but it took 2 - 3 minutes to load games, Dios Mios was doing it straight away. Not sure why this is but it's all working so I'm happy.

Can play Double Dash without going into the loft :D.
