As of now Nintendo has made the eShop accessible without the GamePad but what about the rest does it require the GamePad? Somewhat.
  1. Games: Selective (always look at the rear cover to see if you need the GamePad or not)
  2. Main Menu: Optional (you can use the GamePad, Wiimote or the Wii U Pro Controller)
  3. Miiverse: Optional (you can use the GamePad, Wiimote or the Wii U Pro Controller)
  4. eShop: Optional (you can use the GamePad, Wiimote or the Wii U Pro Controller)
  5. System Settings: GamePad Only
  6. YouTube App: GamePad Only
  7. Internet Browser: GamePad Only
  8. Amiibos: GamePad Only
So the Wii U doeswork without the GamePad but it's not recommendable due to missing out on exclusive games which require it, after all people who buy Nintendo consoles want to play Nintendo games.

If you're in need of a controller for the Wii U, there's five options:

  1. QC52mfY.png

The Wii U primary controller that's used on whichever sections Nintendo/devs implemented.

  2. kTgILcl.png

The optional official Wii U Pro Controller used as an alternative to the GamePad, which also unfortunately has digital triggers too.

  3. jx5LZDU.jpg

Wii U GameCube controller will be released on December 31 which will need the USB adaptor that's going to be coming out also on December 31, so if you want you can use your original NGC controller in this case.

  4. TQXNCrq.jpg

These are indeed GameCube controllers but newly produced (just like above) for the Wiimote's use rather than being connected to the USB adapter, so it's somewhat wireless.

  5. Fvtsa2A.jpg

Usable through a Wiimote this is the controller you'd want to play games supported with.
Bundles:
  1. Wii U + Wii U Pro Controller = $139 ($99 for the unit and the rest for the controller)
  2. Wii U + Wii U GameCube Pack = $149 ($99 for the unit and the rest for the controller)
The $99 Wii U is the Basic Edition which has only 8GB whereas the Wii U $130 is the Premium Editionwith 32GBs.

So overall, is it worth spending less $60-100? Depends on the customer and what kind of use he/she is going to give. Personally, I'd go for the Wii U + GamePad and then buy a standard controller seeing how the GamePad is necessary for certain exclusives.

Thank goodness this is just a nonsensical post. For a second I thought Nintendo had caved, whilst something which may have changed things at launch (more likely though, it would have fragmented users and developers alike, preventing uptake) now it would just be the last nail in the coffin.

What are you on about?
As you said, you need the gamepad to use the system settings. That means you pretty much need the gamepad period.
And that "console only" is without the cables which you also need.

If you set up the system settings once you won't need to use them again, so you could "rent" the GamePad and then return it.
Yeah, and be forced to borrow one every single time you need to adjust the settings or use an application that requires it.

Sorry, but your idea is ill-concieved for as long as there are Gamepad-only applications and OS sections. As much as I think a Wii U Lite would be a good idea, it's not coming anytime soon. Nintendo has a long track record of supporting their sinking ships, with the exception of the Virutal Boy.

Which is why I don't think buying a Wii U without the GamePad is a good idea but it does work for the basic part.

1. Obviously. E.g. you're not going to play Captain Toad with a Wiimote and Nunchuk. Why even put games on the list?
5. I agree this is an oversight and should be optional just like 2-4.
6. The app is horrible anyway, thankfully it lets you pair any mobile device (phone, tablet). Much better than the GamePad.
7. Not true, I've used a Wiimote to control the Internet Browser and a USB keyboard to enter URLs. Works beautifully.
8. Well, duh. NFC is on the GamePad. Wouldn't want to get up from the couch and walk up to my Wii U just to tap it with a toy. :P

The YouTube App with a WiFi connection is shit but ever since I plugged the USB-LAN device to my Wii U it has never dropped or given me any trouble whatsoever but 360's got the best console YouTube App of all.

Is it possible to turn the Wii U ON/OFF using the Pro Controller? Im hoping Nintendo will support system settings for the Pro Controller sometime in the future.

If there was a bundle with the Wii U and ONLY a Pro Controller id get it yesterday. Could not care less about Gamepad-only games. In fact I hate both the Wiimote and the Gamepad.

1. Yes you can.
2. Not recommended. You need the GamePad to access the System Settings and certain Wii U games require it in order to be played.

Take Mario 3D World Captain Toad stages, Captain Toad (the actual game), Splatoon, Game & Wario (don't bother getting this it's worse than Nintendoland) and more.

It's not bad you just have to have a Wiimote around which is a bummer. I'd much prefer to plug it to the console with a cable extension.
