As neither Costello nor tj_cool are inclined to spill the beans I suppose I had better clear this up. In the admin backend there is a section called griffin management (it is not nearly as cool as it sounds) but it was decided to change it to the old English style spelling gryphon. Fixing this problem came at the cost of this smiley/emotionicon and fixing both would take too much effort (at least 25 minutes of work), I reckon the right call was made.
