TL;DR - Can gateway runs DS, GBA, GBC roms? Can you play Online Multiplayer owning no original games whatsoever, just the Gateway'd console? Can the console be Gateway'd and (in the case there's no multiplayer with everyone) playable online with eShop-bought games?

So I'm thinking about buying a 3DSXL and trying to be as hustly about it as posssible, zehehe, which basically means not having to buy a single game, unless... Well, if you are here you probably feel like edifying me, so hang on a couple more minutes as I explain.

I've been surfing the interwebs to see what's my best option, Gateway seems to be the most expensive & secure choice, with slim to none controversy when it comes to doing what it's suppose to do.

I wanna be able to purchase a single 3DSXL with gateway on it already and be able to play whatever games I download in multiplayer if available and if that isn't possible then can I get specific 3ds games in the eShop and then play them online? Or do they have like some firewall against people who have gateway'd machines?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, No, Yes

Yes, but the official DS servers are no longer online, so only for 3DS games unless you mess around with patched roms that use custom servers. And it's slightly tricky to do.

Yes, but at the moment the eShop is inaccessible to Gateway users because of new encryption so you can't even buy anything from the eShop.

Also note that in the future Nintendo may change things, due to an update or something else. It's not guaranteed that you will always be able to go online with it.

Thanks for the quick reply! If you don't mind, I'd like to respond and ask a few more questions after reading your reply.

No GBA roms support but yes to GBC support? Are you certain? Seems odd

If I get R4 (which is not for 3DS roms) can I buy 3DS games from the eShop and not have to worry about like being blocked or something as theres a possiblity it will happen to Gateway's consoles?

Can the R4 run GBA roms too?

Seems to me like if theres no harm in getting the usual R4, it's safe and reasonable to just do that and get eShop stuff for the 3DS. If them hipsters Nintendo would put DS games on the eShop i wouldn't even wanna get R4.

**for the one who replied before me just now: I'll probably get the 3DS with the R4/Gateway already installed, so I don't think I have to worry about Firmware cuz they'll sell it to me all set up.

The thing is, officially it supports neither GBA nor GBC, but there is an emulator for GBC games that runs as a DS program, so indirectly it can run GBC games. GBA works differently and can't really be emulated properly.
If you get a DS mode flashcart, you probably won't have any online-related issues, but up until now Gateway consoles haven't had any real issues either (apart from being unable to access the eShop for a while now. It should be fixed eventually but that'll take some more time). But yeah, there is a chance of consoles going online with pirated 3DS games eventually being banhammered. It hasn't happened so far yet, though.
The only flashcart that can really run GBA games is the Supercard DS2. It also is very quickly updated to get around flashcart-blocking firmware updates. It's a bit expensive though, and GBA support is far from perfect. It has quite noticable frameskip (although I suppose almost all emulators do) and not all games work correctly.

I think I'm not gonna pirate 3DS roms, don't wanna fuck with that 'cause I'm gonna wanna play pokemon, mario etc online without having to worry what might happen.

DS pirating, tho, since the eShop don't sell those games, is something I'm more interested in.

So DS mode flashcart speaking, is R4 solid? is iR4 different? The website I want to buy a 3DSXL from gives an option to add R4 stuff, so I'm wondering whether or not that fucks with the firmware or whatever(noob in the OS and software concerning 3DS) and might I have problems with it, is it just like possible to move DS roms from the computer to the card and then plug the card and vuala? Or do I need to fuck with the software? Also are there risks to this and what if there's a OS or Firmware (no idea) update , will that remove the homebrew or whatever it is for the DS games?

You can play gba games with an emulator on the gateway card. The compatability and framerate of the emulator just sucks. Or you could buy a supercards dstwo if you dont want to play 3ds roms. Dstwo os the best ds mode flashcart and is compatible even with the latest ofw i believe.
