This is Nintendo we are talking about the term "Cross Buy" does not exist. However the term "one time special" or "limited promotional event" does.

Nintendo can't dp anything that nice way

Nintendo of America “Could Not Support” Squids Odyssey Cross-Buy Promotion

also
you NEED to BUY the 3ds version to get the wiiU version free
you CAN NOT buy the wiiu version and get the 3ds version free
Yeah...thanks for that. Now I've got the mental image of one sole European manager who is trying to do things in the interest for the customer but is being hindered by everyone else. Let's call him Joe.

Joe: guys...really? Has any of you even TOUCHED another console lately? I can buy games on my vita and continue playing them on my PS3 if I want. And heck...steam doesn't even care what operating system you're running. If the game runs on multiple OS'es, you can start a game on a windows PC, carry all settings and savegames over to a linux or mac computer and continue gaming there without issues. How about we do such a thing? :)
Others: meh...why should we do such a thing. If they can start the game, they already have our product AND the game. What else would they care for?
Joe: well...it would tie our handheld to our console. That could revive that console a bit, by the way. It would mean that they would already have sort of a gaming library when 3DS owners purchase a wiiu.
Others: so they won't buy wiiu games. And what point would THAT be?
Joe: *realising that the others are operating at a different level, so starts speaking a bit slower* If they would have the console, they would be more inclined to buy games for it. It might also increase the library a bit when developers make games for both systems. We could do that, right. I mean...like that brain training game?
Others: no way. We're giving that to wiiu owners for free because we need them to realise it can play DS games.
Joe: oh...okay. There could be other games... :)
Others: not from nintendo! We'll be damned if this "buy one get one for free" deal ends up costing us income.
Joe: erm...it's not exactly "buy one get one for free". You see the game is the EXACT SAME GAME!
Others: *blank stare*
Joe: ...
Joe: nevermind. It's still a good idea. I say we run with it.
Others: why should we care?
Joe: *grinding teeth* at the VERY least because when we announced the wiiu, we said we would tie the console and the handheld closer together
One of the board directors: oh, I remember that! Iwata's speech writer must've been drunk at that time. Gee...you don't think that was meant to be serious, right? :P
Joe: *sigh* can we PLEASE catch up to the competition here? Modern gamers aren't as stupid as censored miiverse drawings seem to suggest. They will know it if we support it...it may encourage indie developers to release on both platforms as well.
Others: oh, okay...fine. Go ahead and do it if you want. Find yourself a third party developer...
Joe: :D
Others: ...from this garbage bin and see if they see anything in your proposal.
Joe: eh...thanks. :)
Others: oh, and it's meant to help the wiiu, so we'll only offer a free wiiu game when they buy the 3DS version. Not the other way around.
Joe: what? How does THAT make any sense?
Other director: we don't make SENSE. We're nintendo. We make GAMES!
Joe: w...what? Is that a failed slogan from marketing?
Other director: ...maybe. In any case: you heard it. Now get to it.
Joe: okay...
Someone else: oh, and...keep nintendo of america out of this. Those clowns are even less keen on this innovation thing as you seem to be.

Well, I guess good going Nintendo. A few more really substantial improvements to how you handle your eshop and account system as a whole, and you might catch up to 2006.

Except Smash on the 3DS and Smash on the Wii U are two completely different games, it's not really a cross-platform title in any shape or form.

I wouldn't care that they're not the same game, it'd still be nice to have a cross-buy for Smash 4 Wii U x 3DS.

It's also an unrealistic expectation/hope.
Fo shizzle. Nintendo is looking to maximize profit with every first party game. For Smash, that means selling the 3DS and Wii U versions completely separately, as even if good 'ol Wiicube won't buy both, 99% of the rest of the people that own both a Wii U and 3DS will. No way in hell is Nintendo going to give up all that dough.

...unless they were aiming at convincing 3DS owners to get a Wii U because "they have so many Wii U games now thanks to buying 3DS games that they might as well double-dip"... but that would make business sense, so let's dismiss that as pure fan conjecture. :P

Soon as the 3DS NNID were up last year, of course it would be compatible with the Wii U. Same account system, they had that NSB3 discount going on if you owned it on the other system. There's this current Pushmo world discount promotion if you own the 3DS version already.

Crossbuy is certainly possible with account system in place, it's up to devs if they want to push it.

Doesn't make sense for this to happen right before Nintendo can profit from everyone buying Smash Bros. on two separate consoles.

Apparently there are some differences between the 3DS and Wii U versions in terms of content.

...Not that it's exactly inexcusable though. Nintendo has always shoved out two Pokemon games at a time and then an "enhanced" version a bit later.

To be fair almost all the stages are different, the WiiU version has a shitton more music, obviously the graphics are different (although I suppose the 3DS could just use decreased quality models of the WiiU version), there's a bunch of platform-specific modes like Smash Run and there are probably more differences. The character roster and gameplay are the same though.

Except Nin10doh isn't the one doing "crossbuy" (if it's even that, since this is a "limited time offer"), so everyone mentioning Smash Bros and crap is just bringing up irrelevant "what-ifs". This isn't going to be a thing with Nin10doh, since they would rather just profit from people buying 2 separate games.
