I'm considering buying a refurbished Wii u, but I'm a little paranoid. Since the exploit was shown a few days ago, I'm wondering if Nintendo will update the Wii u before they ship it out. They aren't shipping out for another week, so I'm afraid they will patch, then update them. Has anyone gotten a refurb Wii u? What version did they ship it to you on?

Firmware 5.0 is only live for...a couple weeks now? (since June 2nd) I doubt you'll even find fully updated wiiu's in stores right now. I'd say it sort of depends on where you buy it and to what degree they check the wiiu on defects.

Besides...the bug the exploit used wasn't fixed in 5.0. It just needs reworking (check the stickies). So until the next firmware update ships (which...may be a bit sooner than nintendo expected themselves), you'll probably be safe on that front. :)

Shrug, doubt it's patched already so you should be safe. I'd just get a bundle though. Pretty much any bundle out there other thank MK8 (could be) is 3.1 or lower, plus a few free games.

Monday they should be shipping more out. Basically as long as a patch doesn't come out before monday, it should be 100% safe. Going to wait till then, and then order it.

it will be months at least before the consoles sold in stores will have 5.0 installed, not that 5.0 would matter as the exploit itself still works on 5.0.

If you're talking about the Groupon offer, my guess is these are systems they've had pile up in a warehouse. I can't imagine them going back and updating 1000's of systems before shipping them to Groupon.

I wonder if it's actually even Nintendo. I would think Nintendo would rather sell you a new one.

Yeah I think you should be fine. I just got my refurbished Wii U from Nintendo, a week ago. I was stupid and didn't check the original firmware version but it was defiantly Pre- 5.0. And it took at least a half hour to update. I think you should be fine although really at this point what does it matter. 5.0 will eventually be exploited.

Also on a side note, the refurbished systems from Nintendo are awesome. It could have been labeled as brand-new and I would have believed it.

The only downside of buying refurbished is that you rarely get the reason why the item is refurbished and you miss out on the warranty from Nintendo. If you don't care about the warranty and trust the seller and the product, then go for it! There is nothing better than saving money... well besides burritos. If you can save money and get some burritos on the same day then you're living the dream! ;)
