Do you think HD games deserve an HD re-release yet again?

I dunno if I asked this question or not, but since Grand Theft Auto: V is coming to PlayStation 4 & Xbox One it kind of makes the companies and those two consoles look like they have to rely on last-gen games rather than newly made games.

It's not just GTA V that's gotten an HD re-release others such as, The Last of Us, Tomb Raider and Halo: The Master Chief Collection have it.

I mean, it's good that they're giving these games yet again a new release although they were already in high definition, a large chunk of its fanbases have played and so overall to me looks like a missed opportunity to be focusing on developing new games rather than working on something that already came out.

Anyhow, when I purchase my PlayStation 4 it won't be to play games that are already on last-gen systems as I couldn't careless for better graphics if that's all they're going for, yeah sure it might include all of the DLC though yet again not really interested in that too.

Well, considering neither the PS4 nor the Xbox One are doing anything in the name of backward compatibility when both companies had no technical reason to avoid it, it might simply be because "how are you going to play these when the system they were made for stops working?"

Rereleases have their ups and downs for me. For all I moan about things game design has come on leaps and bounds even in the last few years and that can make relatively new games borderline unplayable and I reckon in about 5 years time it will almost be night and day, especially if you froze yourself now.
Likewise release whatever you like, certain actions might risk diluting your brand (franchise, publisher, dev... it makes no great odds which) and despite the above I might have played your game before and have all these other shiny things to play with now. Such a thing is probably why Nintendo can get away with it.

That said the cost of releasing in general is only going down, the general gaming audience is only going up and it is the one of the only two valid actions I reckon you can take if you have got yourself in a tizzy about second hand games (the other being invest in a shop that profits from them and/or do it yourself). Equally people pay for convenience, always have, and though I possibly could dig out my old copy of doom or something and futz around with dosbox, source ports and mods I may just pay the $5 to have to on steam or something.

Likewise though the new consoles are not all that much more powerful than the others when pushed it is still more powerful so I could well have a better game out of it; convenience also applies to developers and though one could spend 4 months optimising a graphics pipeline to have pop in 30% further away on the PS360 they might just be able to have that simply by pressing compile.

I don't see it as an HD game getting an HD re-release. I see it as a game that's still current and relevant getting another platform to appear on, and maybe upping the graphics a little at the same time. And there's more to it as well, I think...
Let's take The Last of Us as an example, We have a few scenarios: Some have played the game and thought it was alright. They're done with it. Some have played the game and think it's omgwtfbbq-awesome and would want to play it again... and if there's a little shinier version? Well that's just splendid isn't it! Maybe it packs in some DLC and what not, kinda like GOTY titles does. Then we have those interested in the game but haven't played it yet. Some want to take the cheaper game, and some will go for the newer one... extending their brand new PS4's game library.

Can we please get rid of the "HD" buzzword, please? It makes no sense if the previous game was HD as well. It would be better if said games concentrated on what they DO add over the previous versions (like including all the DLC).

Other than that, I can't really say I mind. With no backward compatibility, this was bound to happen. And it's not like nintendo isn't guilty of this either (Zelda wind waker, anyone?). Or the PC (doom is rebooting the reboot, to name just one).

Wind Waker was a game in SD and then they remastered it in HD, whereas these ones in discussion were already in HD.

Wind Waker was from two generations ago, and it was a pretty full-fledged remake rather than just running at a higher resolution.

I wonder if releasing an HD game as an even more HD version is as simple as sliding up the graphics in the developer's video settings. That aside, I wouldn't say "deserve", but I am fine with a more HD re-release of a game.

Porting to a new platform may not be always a "HD re-release". It's just a game made available for another console. Just look at the Wii U and the third party games it had at launch. Most were PS360 games with a "definite" version for the WiiU. That being said, if the game is relatively new like the last of us and GTA V, it'd be stupid not to use the extra hardware of new consoles if you're going to port it anyways. Just doing HD graphics may not mean the game is playable. Constant high fps and high resolution will almost always be better than changing fps/low fps on high resolution.

I don't really think The Halo Argument Applies here, as This will be the first time you can play all 4 Halos on one console and on one disc, with Halo Combat Evolved anniversary being the only "technical" HD re-release here. Halo 2 will finally be getting the HD re-creation that it hasn't had in its 10 years of release and Halo 3 and 4 will be getting their own 1080p, 60FPS boosts as well.
In comparison I don't really think it counts as much as the other games you have on the list but I can understand the reasoning.

I'd also like to point out that the re-releases aren't really a bad thing. Typically those who loved a game so much would love to play it again in better looking forms that also come with all DLC they may not have gotten before, and just to enjoy it again.
Take Tomb Raider for example. I got every achievement in the 360 version. It was my favorite game of 2013, and I ABSOLUTELY bought it again for my Xbox One (not the day it came out mind you, but a little later down the road when it was cheaper) Just to play it again and get achievements in it again. Fantastic freakin game. If I had a PS4 I'd most likely pick up Last of Us a little bit down the line. Maybe not Day 1 but definitely at some point. I only rented the original copy from Red Box so it's be nice to take a little more time with the game and probably try to platinum trophy it, and have its respective DLC

It's not so much a matter of "Does this game deserve a rerelease?" as it is a question of "Will it make money?"

Will a release of GTA V on PS4, Xbone, and PC make a metric shitload of money? The answer is yes, so that's what we're getting.

The re-releases you gave as examples obviously aren't HD re-releases. If anything they are 60fps re-releases which is something I demand to see more of for hopefully all console exclusive games.

If im reeeeaaally lucky they will re-release the first 2 infamous games in 60fps on next gen console(s?) because I couldn't stand how inconsistent the frame-rate was on the ps3, buuuut I did like the gameplay and the way the story was playing out quite a bit.

Simply put, they're enhanced ports (and 60fps+ is kind-of the best thing ever if you weren't aware).

I don't like the inFamous game(s) (I got inFamous 1 for free from the Welcome Pack) and while games don't all have sixty frames per second it's not a deal breaker to me although it does bug when there's a slow down here and there, still, doesn't ruin the experience overall.

In that case I think the real title of this thread should be, "Why should I care about these current-gen re-releases of last-generation games that already look so nice?"

My answer to that remains: because 60 frames-per-second.

The actual answer to the existence of these re-releases has already been said however. Even more money for game publishers and developers.

The Last of us gets an actual remaster.
GTA 5 just gets ported to the two consoles, or maybe Rockstar has already been developing GTA 5 for the XBone and PS4 whilst still developing it for the 360 and PS3.

Personally, I think it's way to soon but then again, it boosts sales of the console + game and that's all dev's want.
Money.

Quite sadly but it's the truth.

Rayman Legends anyone?? 1080p@60fps on PS360U and they re-release it on PSbone just to profit more.
now the re-releases like the many PS2 collections(Ratchet, Sly, Jak, Devil May Cry), Halo Anniversary(X360), Rayman 3 HD, RE4 HD and Wind Waker HD where really a graphic jump and not just easy profit.

What's sad about that?

Companies do what makes them money; a company that doesn't do that isn't going to stick around for very long. If you don't like these sorts of rereleases and ports, don't buy them. When people stop buying them, they'll stop making them.
