Unless I am missing an obvious button somewhere, why does the temp not allow thread starters being able to close a thread?

Is there a way to 'request' a close?

Report it for closure, someone will do it when they see it.

There's a "Set Thread Status:" option when you go to edit your thread post (usually the very first post you made in the thread, not to any reply to your thread). If you uncheck "open" then I think that effectively closes the thread. Moderators/Admins can still reply of coarse, but in most cases that means the thread is closed.

You're forgetting reporters can reply too.

:)

At least that is how it seems to work for me when editing my own threads (mostly threads in the trade section), but I think the forum allows you to do this to your own threads in any section of the forum.

Oh them too. Basically anyone with a rank above a normal user could possibly reply. :P

Screenshots? I don't see this checkbox even in advanced settings.
I'm on DarkTEMP though I doubt that matters.

Such a thing has come up in the past and the opinion of the site management runs roughly as follows

Is it really necessary? By and large the only real reasons to close threads are when they have gone off the rails, was never going to go anywhere (rumours and the like) or if we need to direct people somewhere else -- dupe threads, newsposts where the original thread might not have a suitable first post and threads where the subject has diverged enough to warrant a new one (including radically different new versions of guides/tools/faqs/lists.

Necro posting is hardly an issue, both in general and people doing it if it was. About the only thing it would do is allow those that wish to throw their toys out of the pram another weapon in the arsenal.

There are good reasons, for those there is the report button.

i think the only reason you need to close your own thread is if you make a "1 time use threads" or "quick questions" i mean, something like this thread which you ask a question get an straight answer and its no use to keep it open because you already got the "correct answer" but then again, whats the diference in closing it? the only thing it does is making a fence against that persons who answer to 1 year old threads

as for flame\people discussing, why take the fun from moderators?

and if you ask a questions someone later still have doubts, they can steal this topic and keep info on 1 place instead in 3000+ separate topics for the same kind of question..

i wish there was some kind of a dropdown box or link menu in the first post so you could navigate to important information, specially on that tutorials with more than 20~50 pages which good information gets lost in the middle and people usually just ask again the same thing (yes they can use search box but is not very effective...)

Well for me this shows up when going to edit the first post of my threads:

You only see this if you edit the very first post. The post that created the thread basically and obviously this only shows up on threads you have created. Just have that checkbox unchecked like shown above and then it's the equivalent of closing your thread.

Yes, I understand what a thread op is lol.

I do not have that option. You must be an elevated member.

Members can not close their own threads. As mentioned before you need to use the report feature for that.

The trading forums are an exception, people can lock and rename their threads there, but not in any other forums.

Normal users don't have that option simply because it's a window for abuse - people might start closing the threads when the conversation goes down a route they find unfavourable, but which is otherwise a beneficial discussion. The staff does close threads upon request though, so using the Report button is the best way to have a thread closed. ;)
