Keep on milk'n that cash-cow.
Seriously, how many releases between 2 and 3 now?
To be fair, these HD releases, I can actually agree with. Before them, it was a pain in the ass if you actually wanted to play all of the entries:
- 2 games on the PS2
- 1 game on the PSP
- 1 game on the GBA, re-released on the PS2
- 2 games on the DS
- 1 game on the 3DS
At least here, it knocks it all down to being able to just be:
- 6 games on the PS3 in 2 collections
- 1 game on the 3DS
They also remove having to actually play the super terrible DS entries in the series, which is a major plus to me. This is also a good way to bridge the gap between the major numbered releases. If somebody wants to replay the series and refresh their memory before the third game, it's now easily possible. All in all, this was actually a really smart decision on part of Square Enix. It helps that, for example, Kingdom Hearts 1 wasn't just made a bit prettier. They even recoded some of the mechanics to make the battling feel a little less archaic. It still isn't as smooth as it could be, but it isn't nearly as bad as it used to be either when looking at the differences in the battle system between the first and second games. As well, these are Final Mix versions of the games coming over, which Americans and Europeans never got official releases for in the past. These do have more content worth playing.
All in all, I can get why somebody wouldn't like the Kingdom Hearts series, and I can easily see why anyone could feel they were milking it. I definitely agree that, especially the DS entries, although filling in some story gaps, were better off being presented the way they are now in the HD remixes than ever being forced on us as games to actually be payed for. These HD remixes though are some of the last bit of milking they can really do with the series though with everything pre-KH3. They can't do much else in the future to really make any of the games in the collections better.
Anyways, I'm looking forward to this. I've played every KH game at least a little (just never beat shitty Re: Coded or the super shitty Dream Drop Distance), and having nearly all of the KH games readily available in some form between two discs will be nice.
