I got a regular 3ds. It's midnight purple with serial number CW723xxx and the firmware is 4.4.0-10U . I live in the U.S.
I got mine from toys'rus. It's hard as hell to find the regular 3ds' with the proper firmware in the United States. The guy at in the electronics section said that nintendo is discontinuing the sales of those models in stores besides online. That only leaves 2ds and 3dsxl systems. I heard the same thing from a employee in target 3 months ago. It seems like Nintendo has found that either people want budget (2ds) or Large Screens (XL)
They can't drop support for the regular 3DS though, they don't want angry customers on their hands.

It's not strange at all. I just bought a midnight purple 3ds(not XL) with serial number CW7235 from toys'rus and it came with firmware 4.4.0-10! YAAY!
If they do drop support then it would be an outrage. I can't see how there isn't a demand for regular 3ds' when obviously there is. Maybe they are trying to force sales of the 2ds on people.
Ok well I was just going off the wiki for finding 4.x consoles, the advice there states the cut off was around cw12xxxx
But I suppose the standard 3ds was out a lot longer than the XL so it stands to reason there would be a lot more standards produced with 4.x or below than with the XL's
yes since it had come out in 2011 and that's at least close to 3 years give or take worth of 3ds(not xl) that they have still left in the wild of some stores. Try toys'rus if you are looking for one i definitely can confirm that serial number and color model has at least 4.4 on it.
well i have a few 4.x consoles so i'm ok, but i just edited the wiki to show the higher serial limit.....hopefully it will put someone elses mind at rest when looking for a 4.x console
Cool. That will definitely help. I wasn't all that sure before buying either when i saw there wasn't much information on the serial i had but once i got home and tested it out it said 4.4.0-10U so there you go. Hopefully this well help any who are looking. They are hard to find so to anyone else reading this try to get at least a midnight purple one. Other posts on this site stated that would be one of the eligible models.
All of them look to be 4.x assuming they are brand new but lowest would be most safest I.e suh101045xxxxx

well to be fair i only picked them up as they where dirt cheap.....just 2 standard 3DS's one was £20 and one was £30 and i got mario land 3ds included with one of them........don't get me wrong i had planned to pick up a spare anyway, but i was waiting to get it super cheap, still hoping to pick up another XL at some point, and thanks to teensy i have 2 extra gateway cards to go with them
so i have a console for my GF and a "loaner" which i have lent my sister
I finally found a 4.4 firmware at a Wal-Mart on 5/30/14! My Gateway card is on it's way from dsflashcart (I got my dstwo card from them so I know that they are reliable). It should show up on Monday.

the vram is one advantage when it comes to AI but ends up being slower even with that and really AI is the only use case that needs more than 12gb vram right now

I think I watched a video where two games at 4K where eating just over 16GB of RAM and it's the one case where the 7900XT and XTX pulled ahead (minus RTX of course)

So my opinion is that they could age a bit better in the future, and maybe AMD will continue improving them via drivers like they tend to do. No guarantee there but they have done it in the past. Just a feeling I have.

least amd 7xxx has tensor cores which the previous generations didn't so there is the potential for AI upscaling
