Out growing video games?

It seems to me the older and older I get the less and less video games appeal to me, even though I love them and have had a passion for video games since I was a kid, and still do it seems video games don't seem to hold that magic obsession in my heart like they used to, and it really bothers me. I feel like I'm slowly out growing video games, even though I don't want to. SO is this happening to anyone else as they get older? Is their anything I can do to to "fix this"? I don't know I just want to have that same passion for video games now like when I was 8 and playing through Pokemon Red for my first time.

I get the same feeling at times. As soon as I turned 17 last month, it started decreasing to a point where I don't even want to bother with handhelds or consoles. I have to force myself at times to get interested, which upsets me, since I'm not trying to lose that feeling at all. The only thing to do is keep pushing as far as I know. Yeah I know it hurts, but in the end it will be all worth it.

Games lately have been far too easy.... Perhaps try a mmo, or take a break for a bit. The magic comes back.

I am almost 23 and still love the same games I enjoy. I do find a lot of the new games no longer appeal to me as much anymore though. I think a lot of the new games have started to feel pretty stagnate over the years and some are just trying to hard, example Yoshi's New Island.

I think it goes in phases. I went through the same thing about a year ago. I bought A PS3 with a bad drive and PSN, that got me back into gaming, and then NHL 14 sealed the deal.

Another possibility is game overload. Back in the Commodore 64 days (yep the 80s), I had access to tons of pirated games, and ended up spending more time collecting games rather than playing them. I got to the point where I would load a game just to see the cracktro and move on.

The game bundles have effectively became a legal way of doing the same thing.

No, games were definitely harder back in the day. I've gone back to some of my old SNES games the past few years and the difficulty level on some of them was pretty remarkable. I remember specifically playing games like The Lion King and Toy Story, and I was getting Game Overs within the first few levels.

I thought this for a while but for some reason I started playing more than ever. Probably has to do with me going to community college and all my friends going out of town.

This is why I roam in the NES to Gamecube era, I feel anything else is really a waste of time. I'd suggest to revisit a classic game in which you find hard and beat it. Perhaps a trip down memory lane is needed, games now a days cost way to much for not even a full day of play . . . . . . $60 bucks for 4 hours? Yeah I'll pass, and what's with 95% of these games having you look through gun-sights. Modern games are far too easy and appalling to say the least.

I always tend to find myself falling in and out of love with games. Lately I have found a lot of joy re-living some classics from the 16 bit era which has kept my interest in games pretty steady

Unfortunately, this is a common thing that happens to many of us, and it really is hard to get through. If you search the web you'll find that there is countless threads and articles about this. I myself have experienced this and it seems to come and go. There is a lot of things that you can do, but it's important to not push yourself to play games. Games are supposed to be fun!

Here's some things I recommend
1) Just accept that you're not interested at this point. You can always pick it back up again.
2) Choose your next gaming experience wisely. Try to aim for a unique gaming experience. No shooty shooty bangs!
3) Challenge yourself. Make goals in games that are not there.
4) Go with the flow. Try not to grind the hell out of a game! Enjoy the story..
5) Find lots of people you can play with. More is better!

If these don't work maybe it's the gaming industry itself. Hell! I can't even remember a recent AAA game that was unique. Anyway, hope this helps hopefully you can find that spark once again.

yeah I think it's happening to me, but I like to believe it's the games that are changing, not me.
It just seems like all the same old BS to me.
In the older eras you'd get new genres of games coming up left right and center. there were so many original ideas.

now it just feels like I've already played everything.
also when I see people getting really obsessed with a game, playing it for 12+ hours straight and clocking up stats, it just doesn't make sense to me. doesn't look enjoyable.

I wouldn't say that ALL games these days are bad though. we still get some ground breaking games with original ideas.

Plus, the amount of games I'm willing to pay $60 for right away is pretty slim. The first game I'll be buying at full price in ages will be Transistor, and that's just a $20 indie game.

It's a hard thing, watching yourself become the hipster.

Just wait for the moment when you get a stable job and find yourself in the "I'm still as cheap as during Uni, but suddenly I earn a few thousand per month compared to the amount of money available during the same time at Uni" moment.. I find myself buying less and less games at launch and usually just end up snagging them when they go below 20 or something.. :3

On topic, I spend a lot less time gaming than I did as a kid, but I still game quite a bit I think though I am slowing...As a kid I used to play 5 or 6 games within a day, an hour of Spyro here and an hour of Pogymanz there...now I just stick with one for a few hours and that's kind of it.

As far as growing up from things goes, yeah, I definitely play a lot less. I used to be able to play hours on end, but nowadays I'm in college so unfortunately I have responsibilities. Between work, studies, writing things here, and research, I have almost no time to be playing around. ;P
