Can anyone confirm that since SMT IV is on fw 4.5 that the LE 3DS is also on 4.5?

If I got one new with intents of using it for the gateway 3DS, I would be able to change the system menu to English and play any region's roms, essentially making it a NTSC for my purposes?

Would there be any drawbacks to this besides not being able to play NTSC retail carts?

Just because a game can operate on a 4.x firmware does not mean that a 3DS will have that version installed. The best way to determine firmware is to compare the serial number to the known database. It is possible for the bundle to have a higher firmware installed since bundles can still be made after the game's initial release. I have seen a few instances of this myself for "limited edition" consoles.

Thanks for the info. Looks like Super Robot Taisen UX 3DS LL is the lowest japanese 3ds on 4.5 reported... Anyone know what fw SMT 3ds LL comes on?

Are there any catches to using the gateway to make your 3ds essentially region free, besides not being able to play retail carts?

You can still play retail carts. Just load Classic Mode instead of Gateway Mode.

you won't be able to play any other games apart from japanese ones, without hacking, which, you will do :)
you will not be able to change the language from japanese. japanese 3ds consoles are only meant for japan.
if you want it to be so like a usa console, why don't you get a usa one?

SMT LL 3ds is Japanese exclusive and I love how it looks.

woow. didnt even think of that... how feasible is it to do this?

It's very feasible. There are multiple tutorials on how to do it. Just Google it. There was a nice one showing somebody putting a Pikachu shell from a nonfunctional unit onto his 3DS. I can't remember where I found it though.

It looks like you only have to switch out the bottom PCB so it really wouldn't be that bad, I thought you might have to swap every component out, cool. Might be a fun project, though I'd still wait until I found out what FW the SMT 3ds is on.

i found out what firmware the tomodachi collection 3ds ll was on months ago, i just sent lots of ebay sellers a message and one of them checked :)
i was looking at some others, and i think i even made a thread with a list, but no one really cared about it.
and stopped caring after i got my 4.5 3ds haha ;)

i don't think the SMT 3ds comes on 4.5, otherwise i would imagine it would be on this page, being sold as a 4.5 3ds

Well if I did do a shell swap I guess it would not even really matter what fw it was on. So since my current 3ds is on whatever fw pokebank was released on, I wouldnt be able to do a system transfer. What save data do you lose without doing this? I mean each game cartridge holds all my game saves? I guess money and dlc I have on my nintendo account would be lost if I didnt do a system transfer?

Your saves would be ok (except for saves for any digital content.) You would lose dlc since those would be tied to your current 3DS. You also wouldn't be able to do a system transfer now either due to reason that I mention below and how it requires the most current firmware on the emuNAND.

As far as money goes, that is now linked the NNID so it could carry over. Your only problem is that the new firmware that Nintendo rolled out isn't fully compatible with the newest Gateway update. You are not able to run eShop or go back into Settings at this time.

But it worked before? So possible gateway could fix it again? Is it possible to purchase items from my nintendo account, sell the 3DS, and someone else could use the purchased digital content, without having to login as me?

It's possible that they can fix it. We don't yet. The new firmware update rolled out yesterday. If they correct the problem, you could create an emuNAND, perform a system transfer between your current unit to your emuNAND (others have done it, I haven't just because I haven't), and then just sell your old system.

If you have set up a NNID on your old system, as soon as you delete that, it revokes all permission to use the old content (it would wipe Pokebank off of my original 3DS when I was farming Celebi's prior to Powersaves.)
