Hi guys, I've lurked on this board for a while now but am a very new member, do hope this is the correct spot to ask this. I've also used the search function. :)

So I beat all 95 of the pre-final boss exits, beat the boss and got to the "The End" screen. I waited a little bit, then came to the realization that it's an old game and probably needs to be reset, and will not go back to the menu on its own. So I made a save state to be, well, safe, and reset the game. When I go to my save file, it says 94 beside it, and the exit I got immediately before I beat the boss is gone. Is this a fluke and I just must try it again, or am I doing something wrong?

Try looking for suspicious areas. At least four exits (Star World levels) have no indication of any kind on the world map whether you found them.

The game's English version places a star next to files all exits were found, unlike its original Japanese.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Sorry I didn't get back sooner.
Ok, so the valley of bowser 4 secret exit was not beat as the path wasn't open to the star. I definitely beat that before, but I decided to test if it was a fluke and went for it again, then beat the final boss again. Exact same thing happened when I reset, 94 exits only (if it saved it should have at least 95), and no path to star road from VOB 4. So with that, I have two more questions:
Does the boss fight count as an exit? (if no, then I actually am missing an exit somewhere)
Should beating the boss save the game? (In my experience, as I said above, it has not)

I know this really is not a big deal at all, it just bugs me, haha. Thanks for putting up with me. :P

Beating final boss is NOT an exit, and does NOT save your game.
So you must find all exits first then save and then finish the game.

Thanks guys! That solves the problem. The 96th ended up being a ghost house that I forgot to beat the secret exit on.
Edit: So other than an added sense of fulfillment, is there any purpose to beating Bowser?

I'm not sure, but you might have to beat Bowser in order to get the masked koopas.

No, you need to beat Special World to get them.

Beating Bowser is useless.

Press up on the gamepad right after you beat bowser.
In the end credits you will see mario followed by yoshi, clappin' along.

If you want to play a castle again after beating it, press and hold L and R shoulder buttons and press start/+ to enter the level.

No... not at all... It's a Hack...

Here is the real video:

You can do this on real unmodified game.
I tried it, by downloading their macro and running it with clean rom and emulator.
So its not really a hack, they actually reprogram running game.

Beating Bowser is only useful with the GBA port since, well, it changes SOME things in the game (but nothing really warranting a second playthrough).

If you want to have a significant reward from getting 100% or beating the final boss, check the GBA port of Yoshi's Island.
SNES one is fine too but missing rewards added in the GBA version where you can meet enemies scrapped from the SNES version.

I can't recommend this enough, but try to get Super Mario Advance 4 (SMB3's GBA port) and a save with the e-Reader levels and stuff unlocked (you'll need a pre-made save, it's far easier than tracking down extremely rare cards and jumping through hoops and loops just to get a working save). It's well worth it.

Beating Bowser is useless.

Special World gets you them on the Super Nintendo, but you had to beat Bowser too on the GBA.

But anyway, why not beat Bowser? Not beating Bowser now is like flying to Vegas, then once you land at the airport deciding, nah, I'll just go back home now.
