If you install homebrew on the virtual Wii mode on the Wii U, are you not supposed to install any of the official Nintendo updates?

Will new Wii U updates mess up homebrew in virtual Wii mode?

I haven't installed homebrew yet because I'm nervous about this. I plan on buying mario kart 8 when it comes out this May and I want that to work correctly on my Wii U.

Unless the update touches on the Wii Mode, it's safe to update. It's obviously best to wait for user reports first before updating. Worst case you may end up with a bricked vWii however all other Wii U functions should continue to work fine. If you're scared you might destroy your Wii U, look for a second hand Wii and mod that. It's what I did and it's sort of the best of both worlds knowing my Wii U will continue to work as it should but I still have the option for homebrew (in my case, mainly to load import discs from Japan since I live in Europe). The original Wii will be 8 years old by end of the year, people are dumping them on eBay for dirt cheap. You can always reuse your Wiimotes and other peripherals from your Wii U, including the Sensor Bar. So just the unit and power adapter + some AV cable (preferably component if you can get it) and you're set.

But really that's up to you. Modding your Wii U should be safe enough. Additionally, depending on what kind of homebrew you want to use, you can use exploits that allow running of homebrew without permanent modification to the NAND. E.g. a retail disc of Smash Bros. Brawl and the Smash Stack exploit is all you need. Works with stuff like Gecko OS, allowing you to load discs from other regions. Maybe emulators may work as well, not sure about that.

Well, some a some updates touch the vWii, like the 4.0.0, that install a IOS or something and it let you to use the vWii off tv gameplay, or the 4.0.3, changes a IOS used by Dragon Quest X, but I think it can't be bricked with updates, in the worst case it can delete homebrew channel (very strange it not was erased by updates 4.0.0 and 4.0.3) but no more than that

conspiracy bullpoo: maybe Nontiendo realized if they keep the wii u exploitable, they can sell more consoles, since they are happy enough with wii sales, they don't care too much about wii game sales

Mirroring on the Gamepad in vWii mode wasn't done through an IOS, but through a special hardware reconfiguration. If I recall correctly, they configured the DMCU (an 8-bit CPU that emulates the Wii's Video Interface) to output to the Gamepad as well as the screen. This was done before switching into vWii mode, and the Gamepad is still locked off in that mode.

oh, did not know, in fact, I had no idea that the Wii U had that 8-bit CPU that manages Wii video output, well, I said "something like that" because I'm wasn't very sure what change that update.

Well I can promise you that it's still going strong at the current update.

I think it's worth it to softmod, especially if you don't own a Wii (or just don't wanna take it out of storage like myself).
