It appears Sony is going to be taking a page out of Steam's book and will soon allow content pre-loading coming April for the PS4, allowing instant access to digital pre-orders on release day.
Very soon it will be possible to pre-load content via the Playstation 4, so you are able to play the game as soon as possible, instead of downloading the 20GB of game data the day it is officially available and therefore wasting a few hours that you could be playing your new title!

The developers from Sucker Punch, known for titles like inFamous Second Son and others, now confirmed that preloading will come to the PS4 this April.
It also appears that pre-loading will also be available on the Vita, from this German screenshot for FFX-X2 HD:

If we take a closer look at this picture...we can see that it says that it says that the estimated date of availability is the 18th march 2014, while the estimated date for an automatic download of said content is the 20th march 2014. But how did someone trigger this pop-up?
Well, a good friend of mine, KanadeEngel, got a promotional version of Final Fantasy X-2 HD remaster as a PSN code and showed me these screenshots.

So as a dyslexic with no reading comprehension, what does this mean? Games download... before they are released and then playable... the day of release?

Yes. You will be able to download any pre-ordered digital game before release, so you can then play the game instantly on release day.

you can have the game installed on your system but the game's license not activated till the release data, so the game will not run

and you you most likely will need to connect to the PSN to activate the game when the game comes out
when you activate game's license the game will work

Ok so... I mean yeah thats cool. I get it.

But doesnt that kinda... create the "Why do we need to go to the last day of school" problem?
I mean it doenst really matter, im really just being difficult here but...

If you are able to download the game before release day
fully
people with fast enough connections would have the game a day or two before its released.
And if all you are waiting for is a code that allows the game to be playable...
Whats the point? If its ready and waiting on my system, why should I have to wait a few days before I can play it?

I think it's something for people on slow connection speeds. I know how annoying it is to download a big Steam game and realise that it'll take a day or two on my 3mb connection.

That said, I'm on 40mb since last week so... yeah. Just throwing that out there.

Yeah, it's essentially for people with slow connections. Normally the "pre-load" period is just a couple days before official release which allows people with slow connections download the 40GB+ games. Hell, it's even useful for people with mid speeds, since it would take me anywhere from 6-8 hours to download a 40GB game. Some people don't exactly have all day to sit and download a game and then have time to play it

It's beneficial for a few reasons. (well 1 and 3 are essentially the same)
1: People with slow connections can play at launch
2: Big games releasing usually butcher servers when potentially hundreds of thousands of people try to download the game in the same time frame. This spreads all that out over a long period of time, alleviating a TON of stress.
3: It's just more convenient to play right on release date rather than stare at a download and wet yourself. (I remember it took my 3DS like 3 hours to finish Bravely Default and it was killing me, and my connection isn't slow, handhelds suck at DLs)

Basically it's just another nail in the coffin for physical copies of games.

Bah, 3DS gives you two download options. Download now and watch the progress screen or download during sleep mode. Why couldn't they allow a third option and let it download while playing a game? In b4 "Nintendo online logic".
