Hacking Updating your 3DS to 4.5.0?

This is not for me but a question for a friend which I don't know.

If your 3DS comes with Firmware below 4.1.0 what is the best way to update when you have not got a retail cartridge to update your system Firmware to between 4.1.0 - 4.5.0 and how do you go about doing it? Sorry I don't know myself and I cannot find a good answer on how because the FAQ does not really explain properly.

I'm afraid the only option is to get hold of a retail cart with the right firmware on it, from your region. There really is no other way, since Gateway can not run on firmware below 4.1. Check http://3ds.essh.co/ for the firmware info, and then rent or borrow chosen game.

And most-importantly, TURN OFF THE WI-FI BEFORE UPDATING FROM RETAIL CARTRIDGE!

Otherwise, it will bypass the cart's update, and update from online to 7.x

What if the system already has the update waiting for it when you log in asking to update. Will having wifi disabled and having the retail cart popped in with the correct firmware update to the 4.5?

Yeah the 3ds will use the update on the cart, just make sure you don't accept the update request from the already downloaded update......to be safe you can format the 3DS to remove the downloaded update

I just updated today my 4.1 3DS: just use the 2.0 Gateway(or 3.0 R4i Gold) firmware and launch the rom of a game that comes with 4.5(like LEGO City Undercover[EU]).

Since the 2.0 GW/3.0 R4i is bugged, it will not spoof the firmware on 4.1 3DS and so it will ask you for un update.

Thanks RJ yeah sorted it did rom Luigi's Mansion 2, FW 4.5.0 on it, updated via GW mode but without the Emunand GW3DS done and turned wifi off, tbh to make things better for my best buddy I swapped him my already done 3DS XL White for his Silver 3DS XL and sorted it myself, we were both happy with the swap and it kept him happy and secure, he was very unsure about the whole Gateway setting up and I don't blame him I thought that was quite a good dead from me!. Yeah so I now own a Silver 3DS XL not a White one anymore, changed signature.

I have a 4.1 silver XL too, and played luigis mansion 2 the other day on GW 1.2 FW, and never got the option to update to 4.5, guessing it bypasses the FW version check?

If not, it's no problem, but is there any benefit of using 4.5 over 4.4-4.1???

Yes you can update via rom just do it as I said up top but you need to be on normal GW mode Firmware not on GW3DS Emunand Firmware to update. Yes also the Luigis Mansion 2 update should scroll across on the top screen on the bottom to let you know of the update.

No really not apparently m8, don't quote me 110% for sure but if you are between 4.1.0 - 4.5.0 system Firmware I don't think it makes any difference at all its just I choose 4.5.0 because it was in my brain cause my Aqua Blue one was on the same 4.5.0 also my ex white 3DS XL

To play newer games though you need to update the Emunand CFW to 7.1.0 -16E GW3DS with GW 2.0b2 Custom Firmware ie to play for example Yoshi's New Island. I know that for sure

For further info m8 PM questy1 I'm sure he wont mind helping you he seems to be very in the know so he would be your best man to ask I am quite a newbie really with gateway tbh, I have just picked up tips on the way along and learnt.

4.1 is buggy with b1, 4.2-4.5 should be fine, but you mays we'll update to 4.5 it seems to be the more commonly used versions plus you will have any bug fixes Nintendo included in the space of 4.1-4.5 but you can still use gateway,

I didn't m8 I just used 2.0b2 to update and it worked fine with me.

Yeah b2 works fine with 4.1 but with the bricking risk with b2 I would suggest people just update past 4.1 and stick to using b1 until 2.0 is out and confirmed safe

No you don't. Or rather you're only partially correct.

Your statement is only valid if the person in question has already set up emunand previously.

If there was no emunand, games like Yoshi's New Island work fine on 2.0b1.

Didn't try formatting after using 3dslink, where are the saves stored? copying the contents of the sdcard to pc before formatting will backup game saves from roms?

Yeah formatting the system memory will delete stuff like eshop purchases made on system NAND, your rom saves are stored on the SD not the system memory, you can take the SD for the formatting process if you want to play it safe

hm, my 3ds has firmware 4.2, just tried now to update to 4.5 with 3dslink 3.0 with Luigi mansion 2 and without emunand, but no luck, when I run the rom it doesn't ask me to update.
Maybe it only works with gateway? or with 3ds 4.1?

You need to use whatever the 1.0 equivalent is for 3dslink

What I did was sign up for a free trial for a game rental service (GameFly in the US) and rented one of the games with 4.5 in it, then updated.
