The PSVita will definitely be able to play PS2 games via the PlayStation Now streaming service, however it's nowhere near beefy enough for PS2 emulation - even mid-to-high end PC's have problems with full speed PS2 emulation, let alone the PSVita.

My obligitory DQ8 remaster port post.

But seriously, I was hoping that the PSVita would be the portable PS2 like the PSP was the portable PS1.

This is where Sony went wrong with the Vita in my eyes. They should have made it with miniaturized PS2 hardware with a few extra bells and whistles for Devs that wanted to make exclusive games for it. Release the PS2 back catalog for it to give it a good start and the handheld war wouldn't have been anywhere near as one sided as it is.

Too bad that's what the DS was :D

The hardware was too complex in the PS2. Sony learned their lesson from using obscure, difficult to program and difficult to optimise hardware with the PS3. You might be able to port over the PS2 library, but there'd be far fewer new games.

PS2 hardware were expensive, and scarce / didn't exist anymore.

No? Not even close? Unless I missed something, the DS couldn't even handle n64, let alone PS1 and even farther out of the picture, PS2.
You're not missing anything. Just sounds like a fanboy from here. (before anyone says anything, I own a ps3, wiiu, wii, 3ds, ds lite and psvita, so i'm not a sony fanboy, infact i'm really looking forward to mk8)

Nintendo DS graphics are similar to the Playstation 1. Some 3D Games such as Need for Speed, Again and Call of Duty Franchise have polygons that are familiar to most PS1 players by then. Even games such as Super Mario 64 DS had a graphic quality lower than its original N64 version.

PSP, on other hand, had great graphics. If you compare games such as Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, you'll see that both graphics and gameplay are almost identical. The same happens if you compare God of War PS2 games with PSP ones.

I haven't seen a PS Vita running a game yet, but I guess you can get something PS3-alike.

I know the PSP had a built-in feature to emulate PS1 games, and it seems the same could be said about PS Classics for the PS3 which offer some PS1 and PS2 games emulated (I'm not talking about the backwards compatible early PS3 models).
I hope the PS Vita has something similar for PS2 games.

Wow, that's quite a bold claim.
Portable Ops, GoW, Persona 3 looked great but they still were PS1-era models with slightly higher res textures, but still PS1-era graphics nevertheless... And they're not even the games that pushed the platform the most.. even FF Type-0/ KH: BBS/God Eater 2 no matter how nice-looking they were could pass for launch PS2 games at most.
I know what i'm talking about.

All PS3 models are backward compatible with PS1 games, no emulation needed.

It will Never happen... The PC can hardly emulate ps2

Eh, just about any mid-range PC can handle most PS2 games at full speed with full HD graphics, so.... to call it "hardly emulate" is an understatement. I wish people would actually look at videos on YT before deeming it a huge mess and incapable of running full speed, you don't need a supercomputer to run PS2.

I spent $1100 on my desktop and as of 1.2.0 (released last month), many games have full speed. So yes, PCSX2 1.2.0 is the most recent version, runs beautifully on a Core i5 :P More demanding games like God of War, MGS2 and MGS3, you need to overclock the CPU. A device like the Vita would never be able to emulate the PS2.
