If you go with the cheapest option you wi'll be unlikely to get any future updates, but if your really cheap get one of the clones(r4i deluxe, 3downlink or orange 3ds they're all the same card), just make sure you only usr the safe firmware files though

I read even the gateway can cause bricking. What clone is safe?

you are asking for a superhero which doesn't have a weakness..

not only you want a cheap one.. so a clone.. you want it not to brick your 3DS, which the Gateway is doing every thing its power to do so which copies its flashcart.

even Superman has a weakness.

Only card with no brick reports is MT card(this is not because its any safer or better but simply because it is running a firmware based on gateway 1.2) but if they are copy any future updates from gateway I couldn't say for sure they wouldn't copy the brick code, all the cards are "safe" if you make sure you get. The "safe" firmware

There are no "non clone" cards except the Gateway, the closest to something different than the current Gateway is the MT-Card (based on GW1.2), it may cost 80USD because is as overpriced as Gateway for their Multirom compatibility.

gateway is the only non clone , if you stick to b1 or 1.2 you will be fine

Yeah, lol, the guy is asking for too much.

all the 3DS flashcarts are clone of the Gateway.. if you really want one. save up and get a Gateway, or play the waiting game... you never know we might get a custom firmware for the 3DS which allows to play roms. but the odds of this happening any time soon is very low.

yes with b2 firmware
how to avoid it?
use b1 or 1.2 , the bricking code was only added in b2, im sure they will make 2.0 final more stable, and safe for use with genuine gateway cards

We could have an elaborate discussion on which flashcart is the best one and why, but at the end of the day there's only one thing you should pay attention to - future-proofness of the device. I refer you to this thread:

http://gbatemp.net/threads/3ds-flashcart-clones´s-firmwares.359405/

If you have a look at the clone cards, you'll quickly realize that although they can run Gateway-derrivative firmware now, they do not have the capacity to upgrade the ASIC microcode from the level of the system itself. This means that the very moment the Gateway team chooses to improve upon or change their ASIC's code, updates for each and every clone will either cease or will become incredibly delayed.

Regardless of whether or not you're upset over the bricking code debacle, the Gateway cart is still your best bet. You might call it putting water on the mill of people whom you don't support, but their hardware is simply superior in every way and is more future-proof. Unless a new clone pops up and has the capacity to upgrade the ASIC code, the Gateway is still the way to go in terms of 3DS flash carts.

Although I think Gateway's business practices are shady at best (even for a rom cart manufacturer) I still have to agree with Foxi4's statement. Besides that, even though it's very obviously not perfected, Gateway has brick code out there that could potentially brick clone carts in the future as well (and only clone carts presumably once it's actually working correctly), besides all the other stuff that was mentioned.

Well, MT-Card just released their 1.1 update and it seems that it's installed via USB, which could be a sign that the ASIC can be updated that way. I'd have to dig deeper into it to make sure, but it seems like a possible Gateway alternative for you.

I'd personally wait a little more to make sure there's no issues with it....I.e. Bricking or anything else first..but their latest update does indeed seem promising.
