The trailer for Bethesda's upcoming shooter, Wolfenstein: The New Order, is now available on Youtube and my, oh my, does it look good. I'm seeing a lot of Nazis, crazy scientists, cool (dual-wielded!) guns, awesome speampunk mechs and armours and of course our favourite hero - B.J. Blazkowicz... wielding a wicked chainsaw. There's some funky music to go with the footage too! What could possibly go wrong here?
In addition to some classic-looking FPS fun the trailer promises something else... a "Doom Beta", whatever that may be... New Doom game? Reboot? Maybe just a re-release of the classic? Who knows - only time will tell. What we do know is that each pre-order will be awarded with a key to it, however the release date of the Beta is yet undisclosed. Interesting, very interesting.
Wolfenstein: A New Order will land on our consoles and PC's on the 23rd of May, so start warming up for eradicating some Nazi's - perhaps by playing good old Wolfenstein 3D?
Update: It's confirmed - the next Doom game is also in development and the entirety of Doom 4 has been scrapped. The game is made new from the ground up, so it really could be anything. See here for more details.

No John Carmack to make a solid engine, and no John Romero for game design. Can't say I'm excited with the countless FPSs saturating the market these days.

sorry need more than just a flashy cinematic and since the last Wolfenstein game was a disaster i don't have high hopes for this.
Admittedly it didn't sell well, but it still has an acceptable score on Metacritic, so it's not exactly a "disaster". That aside though, remember that it was made by Id Software and Raven Software - this one's made by Bethesda and MachineGames. ;)

Neither Carmack nor Romero are gods - they too made
"mistakes" - think Rage or Daikatana. ;)

Carmack and Romero are both gone from ID. I don't believe any of the originals are left any more, it's not what it was way back in the day.

DOOM III was an enjoyable game, it and it's expansion, but it felt more like System Shock 2 than DOOM, though not NEAR as cool as System Shock 2 sadly.

As for the next DOOM release, I have heard that it is not going to be called DOOM IV, but like DOOM II, it will be about Hell on Earth. Also the engine at one point consisted of the Rage Engine, using a modified version of DOOM III's model engine (or what ever you call it) for the players and enemies, in order to increase enemy count without bogging down the computer.
That is one of the elements I missed from DOOM III, was the high enemy run and gun moments, and of course the switch puzzles and abstract level design.
DOOM was once the thinking man's shooter with a dose of LSD. I'm not sure the current ID is going to return it to it's roots, but I'm thinking they can certainly pull off something that will beat Serious Sam... which is a series that shows that just being a run and gun game, doesn't mean you've got the lasting appeal of DOOM.

I'm not claiming them to be gods by any means. Carmack isn't gonna make you a game by himself, but he's the guy who can build you a solid engine to base your game on. If you don't have a good director at the helm, though, a solid engine won't magically make the game good. I've never personally played Rage, but from what I've read, people looked positively upon the graphics and the mechanics, for which you can thank Carmack's id Tech 5 engine.

As for Romero, if nothing else, he's the designer of Doom and Wolfenstein, so I'd naturally defer to him when it comes to who I'd want designing the game. About Diakatana: another game I haven't personally played, but doing some reading on it, it looks like he was surrounded by amateurs (which I guess is his fault as it was his start-up company), and he got caught behind-the-times with his engine and had to play catch-up. He initially licensed the Quake engine, but his old buddies at id one-upped that engine with the Quake II engine adding in hardware acceleration, so they waited for that engine to be released to license it, but porting their work was apparently not easy. By the time they got the game out the door, there were games utilizing yet another new id engine in the Quake III engine. Makes me wonder how that game would have turned out if he was making it at id with Carmack and a team of experienced game developers.

I look at games like Doom 3 and Rage as what happens without Romero. Still had technically impressive engines, but the game design was kinda meh. Remove John Carmack, and what happens to your engines? Seeing Bethesda's other games, they tend to be rather buggy.

the problem with fps these days is they are ALL the same. they all use the same mechanics which is run and gun. basically your on 1 path, enemies appear you kill them, rinse and repeat till you get to the end of the stage which usually results in a boss fight. all shooters these days are practically on rails except you can choose where to move them :P

couldn't give 2 shits about MP or how fancy the gfx are in them they all end up being the same: BORING

the only fps that strayed from this path was bioshock 1, bio2 kinda used and and infinity definitely used it.

it's like the devs are all using the same level editor and all they end up doing is changing the textures, levels, enemies and weapons!

Looks great, Foxi4. I do wonder how much language will be in it, though. As far as I'm concerned, too much makes a game crappy. On a more important note, will you be able to hold down a button for continuous fire or are they making machine guns "modern"? Part of the thrill of a shooter is just holding a button down to fire without worrying about reloading. Or am I really stuck with past concepts of shooters? The knife looks cool; I could stick with that through the game, though...
I'm assuming this isn't coming to the Wii U?

For once, it's not Ninten-Doomed.
Should I be horrified about what you two said or that what you said will actually come true?

I thought all this was common knowledge about modern FPS's...

These days?

Recycling a comment from the other week
Aesthetically these had some quite varying themes (1,2,3,4,5,6), however they kind of looked the same and mostly played the same though; stop me if this sounds familiar, handheld, possible handheld upgrade, pistol, shotgun, grenade, machine gun but limited in some way (ammo, accuracy, clip size....), rocket or basic energy weapon, crazy far out gun that does something unique to the game, maybe a big boy machine gun for the last levels or better energy weapon, mega death cannon. Add sniper/accurate weapon according to taste.

Set pieces were basically the order of the day, run and gun..... well you had the bonus that movement speed was somewhere up around the speed of sound.

shooters havn't been fun or interesting since quake 2 (except for bioshock) they dropped the exploration factor and bought in the run and gun mechanics. and they've sucked ever since.

the only real exception is the metroid prime games but of course the HARDCORE shooter-tards won't agree that's a FPS :P

From the thread title I thought you were going to say "Wolfenstein: The New Order sucks so much, it looks like a beta for the original Doom ;O;" but apparently I was mistaken.

looks a little influenced by inglourious basterds, which could be a really good thing or a bad thing if it ends up being cheap imitation of that type of exploitation, relying on shocks or torture porn. story aside, I am looking forward and really hoping the gameplay is top notch! also the doom stuff is quite tantalising, hope its a new game.
its definitely gonna be one to look out for :)

Speaking of the Doom Beta, it was confirmed that the next Doom game is indeed in development. The entirety of Doom 4 has been scrapped.
"It wasn't like the art was bad. Every game has a soul. Every game has a spirit. When you played Rage, you got the spirit and [Doom] didn't have the spirit, it did not have the soul, it didn't have personality"

Tim Willits, id Software
The developers started over and for now there's very little information about what it's going to be about. It might even be a series reboot for all we know.

Wasn't Doom 3 already, for all intents and purposes, a series reboot?

I can't say I've been really happy with any of the developer's output in any ages. It's a shame, too, considering what they used to put out. If you ask me, id got overtaken by ego.

That's very true, their latest games haven't exactly conquered the charts. Perhaps it's no id's fault though - shooters moved towards the Call of Duty gameplay model and the id fast-paced shooter model was left behind... along with id. ;)

All I know is, If Bethesda Softworks Publish a game, it's bound to be good.
There's nothing both developer or Publisher can lose, when it comes to a game like this.

WET
Rage
Rogue Warrior
Brink
Hunted: The Demon's Forge

Granted I actually liked the titles that bookend that but I am strange that way.
